Why did this happen
Unburnt fuel in the exhaust,left over from the engine rotating with spark turned off, being ignited by hot spent exhaust gases.Often caused by a high idle speed.
Ok because it was really loud.
once again my argo backfires on shutdown and started fine. and yes i noticed i couldent shift into gear that ewasy this time so how do i idle down? where is the idle screw on a kohler magnum? this backfiring is starting to get annoying.... its not fun when you always expect a loud band on start or shutdown
Although it could be totally unrelated I had three 8 wheelers with the Magnum motors and they were all pretty stone reliable but when I would experience backfires it wouldn't be long before I would have to replace the ignition coil keep in mind I piled hours on and most in the heat of summer but that said the first time I started to get shut down start up the odd backfire I chocked it up to to high a idle not letting it idle to cool and a while later it was a no start with no spark total pain to replace the coil but at least it was externally mounted on the flywheel like a lawnmower,my experience only.Cheers NCT
i still believe its just my carb idle to high. but will keep in mind.just staying my Argo starts fine so giving me more confidence its not the coil.
also there was some smoke coming off where the oil breather filter goes as if there was something on there burning/smoking?
I would start with the carb idle, then adjust the 2 jet settings as per manual, then readjust idle. While you're at it check the spark plug gaps first.
After all this and your test drive allow the machine to idle a few minutes for the muffler to cool some.
My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
Joe Camel never does that.

just go back from a hour trip through trail/bog and never backfires once i let it idle 30 seconds to a minute and was perfect. is it normal to have some strange noises when driving for a while like clickking clanking and stuff like that?
