I replaced mine from the inside and it really wasn't a problem dismantling the muffler and shield.

I think if you try and do it from the outside with the muffler in place you'll end up bending...

Yeah that was my thinking as well...running just the tracks without cleats in the summer. I had my tracks on just before the snow and cold temps came and I was impressed how little the cleats tore...
