Ya there is alot of wasted space. When I had my buffalo I took the dump bed and frame off/out of machine and wow what a big difference in responsivness as far as turning and throttle is concerned also climbed up hills way better with all that weight off. I made a custom storage area in the back out of aluminum and moved the battery back as far as it would go and put a big tool box under the seat. I made custom brackets for the rear cargo area in order to support custom boxed storage area and had some 1/8" thick 5052 aluminum bent on a break to make up the storage box. I also added a 40 amp 1 wire alternator ran off the fly wheel side of the 23hp kohler in order to run the super bright halogen lights I upgraded to.
