    Argo magnum tranny trouble

I am hoping the argo geniuses have this on tap, so I don't have to look it up. Basically, the low range is terrible in my 1990 Magnum (the general), and I am wondering if I pull the "new" tranny out of 1983 argo 8 I/C, if that is going to go straight interchange. I think this is going to come down to numbers. Is there a tranny geared slightly higher than my magnum tranny that bolts right in, like a conquest or something? This is gonna get interesting. So, bottom line, what bolts right in, then we will add or subtract a tooth off of the output sprockets to tune it for the glorious Bandolero!

well anything can fit with some work but the '83 is a first gen trans and is not as strong as your Magnum trans, i forget off hand if it will bolt right in or not off hand

Why not just change the size of the sprockets on the output shafts of your transmission?

Have you taken apart your transmission. I know that a couple years ago Dad and I rebuilt the transmission in his 1990 magnum and were able to get the gears he needed for it. The low gear was shot on it much like yours sounds. Looked to us that it was from being shifted into & out of gear while the driven clutch was still spinning.

The general idles low enought to avoid this problem. My heart sank tonight, but it makes sense. I realized I had misread the hour meter on the general, it does not have 220 and some tenths of hours, it has 2200 hours. That is sort of cool in and of itself, though.

That is too bad buddy! Two scineros: 1. We borrow the trans out of your other green 8 wheeler and repair the magnum trans. 2. we get the one out of the six wheeler (old green has popped out of gear on me twice but the six... never) and i rebuild your magnum... or we go with number 1. and you decide that it sucks... totaly... and then you trade me for my trans that will go right into the 8 wheeler ... but it dont matter we will get you a new gear and a few new parts. the only question is how to do it with NO down time. The six wheeler has a HEALTHY trans... that involves no time and no money for you..... things to think about. No matter what you wont hurt my feelings and i will be building my first argo trans im sure

Wow i thought you just wanted to change the low gear ratio.
Sounds like the trans needs a rebuild.

Yes, it does. That is the writing on the wall. It is not preventing us from having lots of fun, but it IS preventing me from feeling like I should go hunting in Alaska in Feb! I just need to find something that works, and like always, when you have it out anyway, you always wonder if you can or should just fix it, or if it could be just a little bit better.
