Although I do not have experience with an avenger (pretty sure someone with an avenger will chime in), it won't be necessary to remove the frame from the body. Check Adventure Argo in the Manuals section - there should be a manual for your machine which will show the steps required to remove/replace the idler shaft.

    No,
Remove the chain, raise transmission for clearance, remove all nuts from flanges, if your sprocket is held in with snap rings move them, it your sprocket has a set screw loosen that, slide sprocket outward, slide idler shaft inward and then outward and up. Cursing is allowed.

If that little chip is the issue, I'd personally run it. If you can raise the trans as high as pictured with the chains on, replace them or if machine is at or above 300 hours and untouched.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

I did mine last fall, and it's some work, but as ArgoJim mentioned, it was all done in place. Whoever designed the machine must have had to work on them in the past, since it looks like pretty close to everything can be done without tearing the whole machine down. At least on my '07 anyways.
