PapaG here. I am getting ready to and pick up my first 6x6 in about a week. A Max II that has been rebuilt. I will post pictures and more info when I get this machine home. I joined here to look for a 6x6 but found one on another web site.
Hello All! Love the site, so much info available - and is the reason I pulled the trigger and bought a used max II a couple months ago. Love this thing, so versatile. I am in the process of building a log home (by myself) and this machine is supposed to be an integral part of the build. I plan to use it to snake out logs and skid them to the site. I will be cutting down 40 + foot long logs weighing in excess of 1500-2000lbs or more. I bought a log cone to fit over end of log so it will scoot over and around objects instead of jamming/hanging up on them. It has alike new 14 horse briggs engine, runs great and I have done some test pulls with smaller stuff (under 1000lbs) and it worked out good. Im a little hesitant though seeing that most of the logs i will be dragging will be over 40 ft long and about twice that weight. ....any of you have experience doing this with similar machine? Am I dreaming using this machine to do that work? Its all in the woods but most of the way that I have to skid logs has logging (dirt) roads and is slightly downhill for most of way. There is some rough terrain, hills, dips, debris, (rocks, etc) and through fields and some kind of steep short downhill areas I have to travel on to get back to my place. I could just go cut one of the trees down I plan to use and give it a go...just wanted to first post my thoughts/doubts here to see what you all thought.... Welcome to the site ky6x6! Your idea to pull a test log is a good plan - best to see what the unit is capable of prior to starting the job.
A few years ago, I had an Argo Vanguard 2 6x6 with a 16 horse Briggs & Stratton and used it, along with a skidding arch, to skid logs for firewood. It is amazing what such a small vehicle can pull - but the key is to get the butt end of the log up off of the ground. The skidding arch was home built, with 15 or 16 inch truck tires.
There may be others with more experience, or Max II-specific experience who can chime in.
Back in the mid 80's I had a Honda 350 4X4 quad, made a 2 foot wideX 2 foot long skid ski sort of thing with carriage bolts clamping a chain. I pulled ridiculously long & heavy logs with that with ease. Without the skid it was quite difficult, sometimes impossible. Can't see why your MAXII wouldn't do it with ease.
heres some pics of the machine, came with tracks too. I dont know anything about the tracks except the previous owner said he thought it would need smaller tires or spacers before they would work? I havent tried them yet but does look like there is not enough room between tires and body. One cleat has damage. He also rednecked the windshield and top..but it works. Ive been known to redneck quite a bit of stuff as well lol
Hello everyone. I am just purchasing my 1st AATV. It's a 2021 ARGO 6x6 Frontier 650. I have about 31 acres of cattail marsh land in the middle of MI and I need a machine to conquer as trotting through a cattail marsh on foot is a chore. I think it's going to be a challenge and a hoot all at the same time. I have been reading the forum a little and am looking forward to the wise and sometimes whimsical stories and advice here. I know I'm going to ask more questions than have answers at first but that's what these forums groups are for. Thanks for letting me in.
