The axles on my st/300 don't have a bolt connecting them to the sprocket tube. It has a square end that mate with I'm assuming a square hole. My question is if I can't get the two apart and decide to cut them and make axles, how much of the sprocket tube is square? Is it all the way through or just the end. And would you drill a hole and use a bolt or make the end of the new axle square?
I'd suggest just cutting the axles and making completely new round axles if you can. After that, you can drill a whole through the sprocket tube and axle and pin (bolt) them. Only the end of the axle is square. If you can find 1" diameter 4140 chromoly, it'd be a good choice and should hold up well to that light machine.
