I Have A 1973 Attex Colt 252,took Axel Out To Replace Barring ,now The Axel Is Unrepairable It Is Bent And Where The Barring Rides On Has Major Ridges And Deep Grind Marks, when I Got It There Wasnt A Barring Left ,the Person I Bought It From Must Have Been Riding It With The Axle Floping Around In It,now It Is A Solid Axle 1 Inch And 18 1/2 Inches Long, now Can I Use Hollow Pipe Or Do I Have To Use Solid Like The Old One,your Help Would Be Great Thanks.
McMaster Carr ( on the web) sells chrome-moly 1" steel rod to use as axles. Much more durable than cold-rolled steel. You can buy it in 6ft lengths.
Use your sprocket tubes or wheel flange tubes as a drilling template to get the holes straight through. I clamp the tube in the drill press vice so that the drill bit goes straight through it and then insert the axle into the tube and drill it. Buy 6 foot and make your axles 18", that way you can build 4 at one time. If you are not using the original balloon tires, you will not have any problems with the tire 1/2" closer to the tub.
One more thing about the holes, do not just drill them to 3/8. You should drill them smaller and then ream them to the diameter of the bolts shoulder. A 3/8 drill bit will allow too much slop. Search this site for "body bound bolt" for a discussion Whipper started on drilling the right size holes.
