Hey guys are the verticle engine parts the same as the horizontal? I bought a 22hp verticle for my riding mower and have the old 20 hp sitting around for low compression in the right cyl. Its a briggs v twin 20 hp. heads coils carb cylinders or whatever cheep.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but I believe there are a few differences between the vertical and horizontal guessing that the two engines are the same line of engine i.e. vanguard and vanguard, or intek and intek.

    differences:

blocks (location of mounting holes for engine, either side or bottom)
    oil pump pickup
pto side engine case (variation of where the oil dip stick is located)
carb intake manifold and carb may differ, depending on application

    similiarities:

    piston and rings
    crankshaft, flywheel, starter
    connecting rods
    camshaft, pushrods, heads, valves etc.
    coils, stator
    engine shrouds and cover (tin)
Air filter assembly (depending on application)

Speaking Vanguards your pretty much right on, the crankshafts are different. the intake manifold and carbs are the same but needs added parts to work on the horizontal.

Thank you all for the useful info! I have the 16 now and need to pull the restrictors and I also just picked up a newer 18 for $300 and will now be searching for the intake and carb to make that a 20!
    Thanks again!
