Thanks Jim! Lots of hood info and much appreciated. Someone a long time ago said my generation machines had 1" axles and I assumed they knew what they were talking about. Never really even paid...
Jim, you are quite articulate & I always look for your input on here. Your knowledge base is immense & I know VERY little so your input (and that of others with your experience level) is critical...
Yeah the more I think about this whole thing the more tempted I am to just rebuild the KT 17 and be satisfied. The power was adequate & there is no hassle going back in (I have welders, plasma...
He said double 50 chain and mechanical brakes. I don't intend to run tracks. I guess I'm maybe more concerned with too much hp than not enough since I have 1" axles. Maybe that fear is unfounded. ...
And now another possibility... just talked to a guy with an "80s" Argo 8 wheeler with all new bearings in axles, rebuilt (by him) tranny in "good" shape. Comes with a 16hp Vanguard that is...
Thanks Jim!
I missed your post here and just found your thread on "Phil" before I saw this. Overall do you like this swap or do you think I would be as well or better served rebuilding the old...
Thanks!!!
That # got me a kind lady who told me the specs she could find said 7amps @ 14v at max speed.
Definitely lower than I had hoped... My brake cooling fan & lights are both switched &...
Just to clarify when you say no crank you actually mean it was cranking but not firing correct?
Was in at Harbor freight and the friendly young man had no clue & could find no info on amperage output on the 22hp Predator v twin.
Anybody have a clue?
Thanks Jim found it. Looks like a clean swap. If I leave freight out of the equation I can have that engine for about $340 more than a rings and gaskets style rebuild kit for the kt - 17($215). ...
Couldn't find that review Jim. Can you give me a link?
Yeah shipping is the killer. I have the flat twin now (kt-17). I was thinking of going predator v twin (20 - 22hp) but not sure if rear cylinder will clear tranny ok. I have an early 80s Argo 8...
Thanks Wedge. That's one of my biggest concerns since it's hidden away in the bowels of the unit. I'm also guessing it's a low hp twin since the genny is only 4600 watts.
Thanks.
Send that Kohler to me and I will run it for a couple years so I can give you an informed opinion:hello:
I'm looking at a kohler gen set in a different town on c-list. It's a flat twin and the only #s the owner has found solar are all generator#s not engine #s
He has 4.5ckm21.rv it is 5500 watt.
...
Just hearing that the baby is doing well is a great update! :-)
I don't know where the year break is but I believe the older machines did not have thrust or retaining bolts. My early 80s HD (and a second one I have for parts) do NOT have thrust bolts, just a...
Generraly white smoke means whater is getting into the cylinder somewhere. I would assume failed gasket... Gaskets can fail for reasons other than over-temp.
Another possibility... and cheap & easy! You said you let it idle for 20 min after boosting... many of these engines won't charge at an idle. Bump the rpm up a ways and it may begin to charge...
No tracks, 22" tires & a 4500# winch :-) .
I can put rings/rods/seal & gasket kit in the Kohler for around $225 so that aspect of it is cheaper.
The Kohler is just the old air cooled opposed twin...
