Clame it will toe 1000 lbs dead wait .Now does that mean with any size engine? My Question would a Max 4 with 23HP. Pull more . The argo 650 HD 23HP said it will toe 1400lb. I will be using my aatv for swamp running and hunting . I also have a acre of myrtle bushes I want to pull out of the dried up lake behind my house .And the pull factor is important . Decisions , Decisions Thanks J.B.

I haven't been on in awhile, during a lapse in judgement I sold my Max and got a 4 wheeler. I regretted it almost immediately. I just sold the wheeler and got a 1979 Attex Super Chief 500. It has an Arctic Cat (Kawasaki) engine in it. Once I get the pastoral paint job off it, it will be in pretty good shape. I'm going to tinker with it this weekend.

Sold my argo guys, Loved it, and put alot of work into it, but just don't use it like I thought i would. ATV is more practical for me as all of my points of destinations to get to are too far to drive with argo and tired of trailering. Atv, I just jump on and go.
Thanks for all the help and advice. This is a great site and made working on my argo much easier. A young family has her now and are very excited to do some fishing trips.

You never know I may get another but not in the near future.

Thanks again, and Happy trails, Mike

Buddy of mine has a cabin (the only cabin) on a 3.5mile long, 2mile wide brook trout lake in Canada... We each bought argo's this last fall in hopes of prepping them to make the trip into this lake without paying the airfare ($250/man). He and his son, my son and myself left home last thurs night/fri am at 3am. We reached the "unloading site" at 11:30 am. 3.5hrs later we were at the cabin  Took us just under 2hrs to get back out Monday afternoon. All boats, etc were there already so we just took food and our gear. We make this trip twice annually on average and had a blast, even more knowing that we could leave at any time, not relying on weather for planes to be able to fly and especially since we paid only gas to get to the unloading spot. I'm gonna try to post some pics but I bring the suck at picture posting. I WILL say though that my son and I caught a 21" brooktrout on a flyrod. We shared memories that will last a lifetime. Can't tell you how happy I was/am with the machines regarding this trip. My outboard motor bracket worked flawlessly (knock on wood) as we had to cross 2 small lakes plus 2+ miles of the lake the cabin is on. All my updates, maintenance paid off big time. Thanks to all for the help! :D I'll try to put pics in my gallery.

I have a late 80's Kohler 18 hp engine in my 6 X 6 Argo and all of sudden the dipstick is popping up and oil is spewing all over the engine. The engine does not smoke so I dont thisk it is the rings. Before I go that route I want to do the easy and obvious things first. Is there a breather for the crank case on this engine? I cant find the oil filter can that be a problem? The dipstick seems to click in real good so I dont think it is that. I bought it from someone about 6 months ago and really don't know what they have done. one last thing is it runs really good. Any help would be great. Thanks

Typical dead right-hand piston and cylinder:

I'm looking into rebuilding the stock engine. Even though it's a 1970 model, this one got the updated 29HP engine at some point. Overall the Trackster is in decent shape. I will need to do a little fiberglass work where someone rode up on a stump or something on the bottom.

I noticed that the cylinders don't have much shrouding around them unlike most 2 strokes I've seen that live in enclosed spaces. I was wondering if adding some shrouding to keep the cooling air flow moving around the cylinders for a longer distance would make any difference.

If I have to change the engine out to something else, I'll probably look into another (newer) air cooled 2 stroke setup so I don't have to mess with the ring and pinion in the transmission (to keep the speed up) as well as not have to worry about oiling problems with a 4 stroke on really steep ground.

The Hoot- WINCHESTER GROWLER is about to go back into production

Winchester, the same people that make fire arms has bought the rights to produce the Hoot, now called the Winchester Growler. Several improvements...

Winchester, the same people that make fire arms has bought the rights to produce the Hoot, now called the Winchester Growler. Several improvements and up grades have been made to the machine including an 18 horse Briggs. I am looking very strongly at a purchase of one of these machines as soon as they are available. As I understand it they should be production in about six weeks. Doug, the Canadian who owns the rights to the machine told me that he sold the rights to manufacture the machine to Winchester. He also said that the whole machine has recieved several up grades including raising the fender wells so that bigger tires can be installed.

I happy that someone has taken this concept, improved it and will have it back in production.

This information pertaining to the drive system is taken straight from their web site.

Explain the drive train.

The drive system is patented and does not use a transmission. Power is delivered from the engine through a torque converter, which turns the main front shaft. The age-old problem with a skid-steer machine has been to transfer power at this point independently to the right or left set of wheels. Up until now this has been accomplished by using a heavy transmission and all the complexity that surrounds it. The patented technology allows replacement of the transmission with two simple swing arms with a large pulley on the end of each (one for each set of wheels).

When the rider demands power, the swing arms (attached to independent front axles) swing back taking up the slack on the belts (attached to the front shaft). The more power the rider demands, the tighter the belts become in this “tension on demand” system. As a result, the belts never slip and are never under undue strain. From here the chains, attached to sprockets in the middle of the large pulleys, turn the front axles. These turn the other two wheels on each side.

Inside each large pulley are disk brakes which are controlled by the movement of the handlebars. Turn the handlebars to the right, and the right brake is applied, slowing the large pulley on the right and the right set of wheels, causing a right turn. This system does not instantly lock up the right or left set of wheels, resulting in smooth progressive steering and turns.

Here's a link to their web site.
