    Extending winch drum

As I mentioned in another thread I picked up a couple of Rule winches off ebay, grand total of £2.35 each One of them is complete with rope etc, the other has had the end of the drum cut off and was inserted into a long pole as an awning winder . I suppose it worked in a fashion.

I need to replace the end of the drum along with all the steelwork that supported it. What I'm thinking is, make the drum twice as long so I keep more rope on the first wind, hence greater line pull longer. I'll extend the drum and sleeve it inside to give it a little more strength to allow for it being longer, I will also make a new carrier out of heavier gauge steel to stop it twisting.

Any thoughts on this? Any reasons spring to mind why this should be a no no ?
