    Hello

Hello all, after years of owning 2,3, and 4 wheel ATV's, I recently purchased my first 6 wheeler. I like to work on interesting small gas vehichles so I purchased the Attex 400 Chief that was recently for sale in Northern NJ. It looked horrible , but it was complete and the engine was loose enough to spin by hand. It was apparently uncovered for years so I spent the first weekend cleaning out all the leaves and loose nuts, and powerwashing everything in a effort to clean out some 40+ years of greasy sludge. I have to say that all that grease helped to protect the chassis , chains and gears. I spent a few hours on this site reading everything I could in an effort to educate myself on all the pertinent details. I removed the engine and have it at a local 2 stroke specialist to be rebuilt. With the engine, transmission, and flooring all removed, the hull does not appear to be in that bad of condition. I painted the entire chassis over the holiday weekend and have ordered various parts that had to be replaced. I can't wait to fire her up for the first time!

    Almost made it back...

Hello all, I'm Joel from Western PA (north east of Pittsburgh). I've actually been a member here since August 2013 but never posted until today. In the past I was involved with 6x6 ATV’s for many years since the early 1990’s having restored an Amphicat, A MAXII and an ATTEX Buffalo Truck, extensively running all three of them for years through all kinds of terrain, hills, lakes, swamps, creeks and snow. Sold the last one somewhere around 12 years ago and promised myself I would get back in to them someday with a MAX IV in mind. In 2012 I was able to get a shop running again and had the funds, space and equipment ready and in 2013 was lucky to find a project vehicle a MAX R.I.M. with tracks that was nearly completely intact, less a motor. My plan was to rebuild the RIM using the new 22HP Predator V-Twin from Harbor Freight Tools. And that's when I joined the forum while researching for info on the RIM and planned to post the progress of the project when I started. The RIM just sat in the shop for nearly a year being too busy to get to it, then unfortunately last fall before I could begin working on the project, I had to close shop due to business problems and move everything out and begin selling things just to survive, including a 76 Corvette I was nearly done restoring. I recently had to also sell the R.I.M. project and sadly watched it roll away on the buyer’s trailer yesterday. I am happy to see it went to someone who will put it to good use as the buyer and his family have a legacy of involvement in MAX IV’s and RIM’s and their restoration and preservation. (I’m not sure but I suspect they most likely are members on here too) I do have hope that someday I will be able to get another 6 wheeler probably a MAX IV. I'll probably check back on here on occasion until that happens but doubt I'll have much to post about until I get into another project. I do have some parts left over that I will be offering for sale and will probably post the offerings here, a MAXII Roll Bar, a complete set of original rubber tracks with tires and rims for a MAX IV, and a T-20 Trans, (also a MAX IV roll cage but I think I have that sold already) I don't see any classified section so not sure where to post for sale items?

Sorry to hear that, looked at your ad repeatedly wishing I had the money for it.
    Hopefully your luck turns quickly.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Ahh, so you saw my ad for the RIM on craigslist? Thanks ARGOJIM for the well wish, I'm sure I'll be back into this again, just need to sell off some motorcycles and try to save for a MAX IV (or an ARGO! - was my second choice but usually they are harder to find in project form)

Hello luvmyattex, welcome to the forum. I'm glad you were able to pick up a six wheeler and that you are at least half way through your restoration. That should be a fun machine to scoot around in. Post up some photos to the gallery when you get it done.

Hello Joel, welcome to the forum (a few months late ) Sorry you had to sell the RIM but I hope you can get back into the hobby soon. If you click on "Forum" at the top of the page, scroll down towards the bottom. There are several classified forums including "Parts for Sale" where you could post the items you have for sale.

Hello Rednick, welcome to the forum. A Max IV is a good machine and it could probably assist in some of your mushroom hunts. Good luck in your search.

    New MAX II Owner

Figured I should introduce myself. I have been browsing the site for a good month now. What a wealth of information. I am very new to the 6x6 scene and recently purchased a 1997 MAX II 16 HP B&S. To make a long story short--up until about a month and a half ago I really never knew these existed. That all changed when I made a road trip with my brother to pick up a MAX II out of Minnesota.
He had been looking for one for several years. I knew right then I had to have one.

So the daily search began using SearchTempest to check Craigslist within 300 miles of me. First week and a half nothing new came up. I was on vacation in California when I got a hit on a fresh post. I emailed the seller and asked if it was still available. He responded right away and said it was. We all know buying site unseen is not the best approach and does not always end well. I asked for more details and some video of the MAX running, going forward, backwards, turning left and right. He did and we made a deal for me to pick it up the 20th of December. So me and the brother made a road trip to get my MAX. You are never too old to have toys and I was really excited to get it.

The good-came with a windshield, front and rear racks, winch and a metal tub surround. Nothing really bad.

Got it home and drove it around the lot. It shifted fine but after a while started back firing and running real rough. I had to keep the choke pulled out to keep it form dying. There were a few other minor issues-broken windshield mount, missing body mount for the rear rack, the winch was never hooked up-no tethered switch or dash switch. Brake did not work.

So, like every new owner I got to work on it.

Thoroughly cleaned the tub-will do a better job in the spring
Milled a new body mount for the rear rack
    Fixed windshield mount
Changed out air filters which were both filthy
    Rebuilt carb
Replaced all fuel line and fuel filter
    Installed fuel shut off
    Installed new hour meter
Installed tethered and dash mounted switch for winch
Greased all bearings inside and out(checked axles for play)
    Adjusted and lubed chains
    Adjusted parking brake
    Installed LED rear lights
    Installed a horn
Added 12V power outlet and USB ports

Got all this done yesterday and took her out for another spin. She runs like a top. I need to get used to driving her but what a boatload of fun this is going to be. Me and my brother race on our jet skis--I am sure we will be doing some of that with these.

Things I still want to do--

    Install bilge pump
Install roll bar onto body surround
    Install soft top

I live right by Lake RedRock right north of Knoxville, IA. We have a lot of Army Corps land-not 100% sure what the rules are for Amphibious ATV's but I need to get her licensed with a DNR sticker and will register as a boat. That should keep them from bothering me.

There are not a ton of OHV parks in the State of Iowa. I know of one around Marshalltown, Okaloosa and Lake Rathbun.

Here are a couple of pics of my new toy.

Sorry for being so long winded. Look forward to participating and learning. Glad to be here.

    Steve-Iowa

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum. It sure didn't take you long to get involved, make a purchase and fix up the issues on your Max II. A Max II is such a fun machine to scoot around in. You should have loads of fun with it.

Thanks for the welcome Mike. I worked on it for over two weeks as I was in gathering parts mode but finished it up yesterday afternoon. Well, finished for now. Still a few things I want to do but I can see why folks like these things. They are addictive. As we say in the Datsun Roadster World "Enjoy the ride".

    Steve
