    hi everyone been workin on this max quite a bit. I only have 75lbs of comp on both cylinders. took valve covers off to hopefully adjust the valves on it only to find they are not adjustable. also ran the numbers from tag on the motor. the numbers are very faint but iam pretty sure I got the last 2 which designate the year of the motor. from the info I got from the service manual the motor is a 85 thus goes out the window the year 92 the guy told me. now I have the machine body number and will call recreatives industries,inc to get the year. so I want to drop in another motor in this rig can anyone help me with suggestions. I really would love to drop in a new Honda if I can get the correct shaft dimensions. any info would be great. iam just thinking by the time I have this motor rebuilt for a few hundred more I can install a new engine. helppppp .

    Sounding more and more like head gaskets or wore rings, I don't think the 20 was available in 85 though I may be wrong.

    Just checking the "sound off" thread up top will give you a year idea of the tub.

    thanks argo jim. iam really disappointed in this max I have buried it 3 times. yeah you stay clean in the mud but my grizzly will go more places then this easily. I got hosed on it pretty bad but I wanted one in the worst way. I want to change the powerplant if that fails to improve this machines performance and noise iam going to sell it in the spring hopefully. that will be easier said then done this is side by side and four wheeler country here in western ny. I hope your right on the magnum not being in that year machine. I do have the body numbers and am going to try and call the company and get the year. the machine is in real good shape other then the weak motor on it.

    Once your engine is right and you have learned how to drive a Max, your grizzly won't be able to follow you where you can take the max. Driving a 6-wheeler effectively takes a little practice and skill. And Western NY is prime 6-wheeler country. With Max being made in buffalo for 40 years, Attex being made in Pittsburgh, and Scrambler being made in Cleveland, the tri-state area is a hotbed of 6-wheelers and enthusiasts.

    drew iam looking for a clutch puller for this max so I can start looking for a motor. I took the bolt out holding the clutch on and measured the shaft size at the clutch opening. I came up with 980 thousands converted that and it is really a 1in non tapered keyed shaft. so iam looking for a new engine with them specs nothing less then 16 hp but would like to match what it has. the motor that's in it is a kohler 20magnum. I came home from work today and just sit in the garage staring at this machine and thinks of what wholesale changes I can do to it. I love it for some weird reason I have buried it in the same mudhole 3 times. I cant stay away from it. the motor is junk. if I put a good engine in it that responds to the throttle I have no doubt it will go through that hole. if I knew how to post a pic on here I would show you. I want to do so much with it. it just fascinates me. iam going ahead with a motor change regardless. I took out the rear seat and moved the front seat back 6in and iam going to make a floor in it for storage room so I can use it in the woods and around the farm. I want a work horse and a play toy at the same time. I love to hunt and fish and want to use it a lot. also going to add a winch and plow down the road. I traded the grizzly for it so I have no choice to improvise it for me. my brother pulled me out twice and I walked a couple miles and used my truck the other time. still is fun. thanks for responding I hope more people will read this and chime in. winter is coming quick and I have a lot to do in not a lot of time. seeya

    I'm sure JoeMeg would love to have that engine for his stock, a good replacement would be a 23 Kohler command or Vanguard. They seem to have enough to push the IV along good.

    BS-don't think these things won't get stuck. They will and sometimes real bad. Notice the winches most of our rides have. I ride with a lot of Razor guys and large 4 wheelers and since they're faster they get to the mudholes first and I have to get through the ruts they leave and usually wind up high centered. As Drew said, once you get past the learning curve of driving a 6x6 you will be stuck much less. I split their ruts and try not to get in a spot where I slip into the ruts they leave. That being said I can go places they won't even think of trying. 20 foot deep water comes to mind. Putting a bigger engine on is not necessarily going to put a stop to your getting stuck, practice will help considerably.

    I have amax iv and the power thing is an issue with it but I have narrowed it down to the belt reflection. My belt is worn and I think the motor needs to be shimmed up to but if you have to much reflection its like taking of in third gear. Worth looking at it should be 1 1/2" I think

    If your Max4 is bogging down in holes where quads are making it thru, there is definitely something amiss. Yes check the belt first, then the shim requirements, if that doesn't do it look at the clutches to see if they are opening correctly. Check engine compression as well, I had an Attex once with a 14hp engine that was on its last legs and it wouldn't get to the mailbox and back without bogging down. Good luck tracking down the problems, it actually gets to be fun when you figure things out and correct things and get to see the rewards of your labor.
