This is what I've been waiting for!!!:adore::adore::adore::adore:
I'm starting to save my pennies for the kit!!!
Mike
Awesome!
Okay, the important questions...
This is an earlier pig, so does it use the same smaller bearings as the RIM? Are you going to heighten the frame rails to accomodate the larger flanges if it does? One of the best changes that I've seen on the Max IV is actually sitting on a bench at RI. They've moved the T-20 forward on the frame so it sits under the rear seat, and lowered the engine to a practical and logical location. It sits down on the frame now, rather than the pedestel it was on before. It looked bone-simple, and I think the benefits would be incredible. Lower C.O.G., simple access to the trans., etc. Since this'll undoubtedly have 1-1/4" splined shafts, are you going the extra mile to change the whole chain setup? This project looks like it could be the most fun...

Mike,
That's interesting about the Max IV are they going to start producing that for 2008. I wonder would they have a retro kit to do that to the older ones. It sure would be nice to have better access to the T-20
Mike
I've been waiting for them to move the T-20 in the IVs and drop the engine down to the frame. I thought about doing the same on my old red Max, but it looked like too much effort. I wonder what else they are going to change to keep up with the Argos newer designs? This is a major change for the Max IV. I think its the first in 30 years !!! This could have me looking at a brand new machine when it comes out !! With the engine sitting lower in the tub, they can push the seats back even farther. Can you sneak in and get us some pictures?
It would also be nice if they mounted the T-20 and engine to its own cradle so you can remove the engine and transmission in one package. I assume they are driving the center axles from the T-20? Without the engine pedestal in the back, you could even clean out the tub in the rear corners. This is great !!! Please get some more info from the inside sources so you can share it with us.
Maybe a modern body design in the works?? Built in beer holders? Storage? Built in cooler? Bigger tires? Lower price?? Bigger drain plugs?
Wow. I didn't mean this to cause excitement. The "new and exciting" frame mod has been sitting there in it's current condition (not a bolt tightened/loosened, or anything changed) in at least a year. I would wager more like 2 years. As much as I sound like a curmudgeon, I really don't think there's going to be anything really ground breaking as far as big changes go. The body is still generally the same as Mr. Gerber's from 1975, and the frame really hasn't gone through much of a change since then, either. Okay; bigger bearings, splined axles, and a bit more leg room for the rear passengers. You can argue that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it...", but come on... 32 years....

Holly Cow it sounds like there going to make a Hustler.
Mike,
You're a buzzkill
sweetttttttttttt anytime frame on these mods .

That would be great! Reminds me of another hobby of mine. The downside would be that you could not pull them without a hoist but I guess you could still unbolt either in that case.

My vote would be for the inline 4 out of the Yamaha RX-1 sled. It comes in a turbo version, and it's a small, tight package. That actually might be a bit much for the T-20, but who knows? I'm not sure about the overall width of the engine, and if it'd fit in the bay. There are a few other turbo-4's out there, but this one's already set up for a (somewhat) comparably-weighted vehicle with a CVT. If I had a second vote, it would be for a liquid triple two stroke. I have a weakness for BIG Rotax engines, so I'd go with something along the lines of the 809, or the 999 trip. Throw a trio of Mikuni 44s on the back, some nice pipes, and you're in business. You've already corralled the reliable ponies. Maybe it's time for something a bit more....uh... twitchy?
Oh well, I've neither the time nor money for something so high-end right now. You decide!:D

[ This pig is in for a bigtime makeover. The first priority is to get that T-20 where it should have been all along, under the back seat.Yea it has the small bearings, that's gonna change also. I'll just fab some taller side rails. The engineers at RI are like snails, they got one speed (slow motion). That project has been in the works for years. They have the mentality of most college raised engineers, if it's not their idea it's not a good one. I sometimes wished I owned that Company . ]
Whipper ,
I agree with you about placing the T-20 trans under the rear seat . This would be great . Ease of access , plus less chains to tighten or replace when they wear out . :D
That is so funny you mentioned the LS1, I have a 98 stock T/A with the LS1. I was looking at it the other day :hmmmm2:Imagine a new LS7 from a ZO6 550 hp stock:adore:
Nelson.
So how far along is the project?
:burnout:
Whipper ,
What year is the tub of the Max IV springer project ? :hmmmm2:
I bet this will be the nicest riding springer conversion yet. the longer wheel base should allow for some nice big wheels and make it a little more stable.
Maybe I'll drive to Phoenix to witness the test run???
What's the plan for tires/wheels? That max 12" stuff would be heavy.. suspension need to be heavier built?
Are the attex and max A arms the same?
i would like to see this springer as i am thinking of getting a max iv. i wonder if it's a good idea to make a springer with 26" tires!

Ahhh....I love watching these things come together.
Will the springer kit be able to be bolted on with the engine and trans in the stock location or will the kit require the relocation? Also I was a machinist for twenty years but I can't believe the stuff you invent Whipper. You should run RI.:rock:
Yeah , I could imagine the mechical innovation Recreatives could make in their amphibs , with Whipper running the show.
Whipper, any chance of putting offset wheels on this one to reduce the track width. I have a NOS 980 Hustler body (virgin, no holes, untrimmed) that would make a nice platform after this project.
:burnout:
Looking goooooooood. In the words of RDR: Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!! !!!!:D:D
Lewis
Are you converting to a single seat or is this to haul the youngn's around the desert?
:burnout:
What color are you going with Whip?
WOW! Max IV Springer!!
Whipper ,
I can,t wait to see the first test ride video in the fully suspended Max IV that you,re working on now.
:burnout:
Fantastic work. I just got myself a used Max IV and am very intrested in the progress of the springer kit.. I've seen the vid's of the Max II and the Attex and love them. I'll have to agree with some of the others in saying that what you came up with and the work you do is pure genius. Please keep us posted, and keep up the great work.
Donnie
Whipper your teasing us again. "oh- & a big 4 stroke"
A. Big air cooled v twin??
B. Big water cooled v twin?
C. Big quad motor?
D. Big (small 4 cyl liquid cooled)?
E. Big turbo snowmobile 4 stroke?
