I have a 2002 max II. Can anyone tell me if I have to remove the transmission to take off the clutch?

You shouldn't have to. I think there's enough room to remove the clutch without pulling the transmission. The clutch is on a keyed shaft, so after removing the drive belt and the bolt holding the clutch on, it should slide off with just enough room between the end of the input shaft and the body. You may have to give it a light tap; some of the clutches stick on the shaft more than others.
Good luck!
I'll second Hydromike, you don't have to pull the trans. Use a small 2x4 or block of wood on the clutch and hammer against that if the clutch won't move easily.
