    New engine, clutch issue?

Had a "mechanic" replace my 16hp vanguard with a brand new 23hp vanguard for my 1996 Max II. Had an issue with idle too high on new machine. Mechanic put a spring to hold back idle. Caused loss at high end speed. Took off and works better. Seems to lose a little speed and has not too much torque up a hill with two riders. Was advised from engine supplier that clutch probably needed replacement. Ordered new clutch. From here on in - will change mechanics. Hope this resolves the issue. Any input will be appreciated on what impact the clutch or for that matter, proper belt adjustments etc. would have on performance.

You probably did not need a new clutch. Probably just a new belt/ properly adjusted. Sorry to hear of your troubles.
