    Belt Deflection Max IV

I recently changed the belt on my new to me 97 Max IV with a Kohler Command 20. The previous belt was loose enough to touch the other side of the belt between the two clutches. The new belt appears to be too tight. It has approximately 3/4" of deflection and squeals under load and it's difficult to put it into gear (Grinding Sound). From reading posts it sounds like most can add more deflection by removing engine shims. When looking at where the engine mounts there is a rubber mount that is almost 1 inch high and a small washer (see picture). I am assuming I can remove the washer but I can't imagine that will do much. Should I remove/replace the rubber mounts with a smaller ones? I appreciate any insight.

I would add or subtract washers where the engine is bolted to the stand. Not where the stand is bolted to the frame.
