Well, the bands spiral a certain way inside the case around the drums.
Get that wrong and it can get expensive quick if you score a drum!

It works good for me, prolly spits about half or more back to the tank. I think your float is fine, but meant to be gravity feed.
I put a T between the pump and carb, the extra line feeds back to the tank, into a fitting I added to the filler neck of my Hustler. anywhere up high should be good.
