    Chain Life?

    Hey guy's and gal's;

    Got just over 200 hours on my 2007 MaxIV and find that it's just about time for chain replacement. I am out of adjustment travel and previous posts suggest that this is the time to call in an order for new chain. Suggestions welcome.

    Is 200 hours an early death for 530 o-ring chains? I have lubed and cleaned their entire life, but have operated in dusty and sandy environments.

    Thanks,
    Rutledge Fuller

    BTW: I did order new chains and idler sprockets at over $700 from Richard. I might postpone installation for a few months, but once the chains slack again they are done.

    RDR,

    Yes I did call RI and talked with Jay. The factory is a little more expensive than Richards Relics. Apparently the Max II has more travel and adjustment than the Max IV on the adjusters. Jay said that usual wear allows 300 to 400 hours on the chains. Sand and silt can cause additional wear.

    Currently my chains have the proper tension, and only one chain has the adjuster on its stop, so I still have some time before replacement. I will run it and watch it. I do know that I do not look forward to expensive chain and sprocket replacements every year.

    I am scratching my head about what I can do different to ensure a longer chain life. I will research the arcives. I know that I have seen several posts about chain lube, care, and maintenance.

    i just put new chain in my attex for around $180. i just ordered bulk chain from motion industries. https://www.motionindustries.com/mot...p/mi/index.jsp and cut it to the lengths i needed. just something to think about for next time. i know your max is a lot longer, but even at twice the chain it would be cheaper.

    Hey Race,

    What kind of chain are you running? My Max IV has 530 O-Ring, which I can't seem to find much of a bargin on anywhere of any good quality. Standard roller chain is much less.

    Thanks,
    Rut

    What part number was this? I got a quote from them for $5.75 /ft for a 50 ft roll of u.s. Tsubaki.

    mine was standard roller chain, sorry i missed the 0-ring part in your original post. i think mine was right in the $5.75/ foot range as well. (i ordered 30' of standard #50 us tsubacki for my 6 chain attex) i wonder if 0-ring wouldn't wear more in dusty, sandy conditions. seems like anything that got in there would become trapped. just a thought

    I'm new to 6x6s but have 30 yrs experience trying to keep MX chains alive in the sandy soils of Florida.

    O-ringed chains and liberal use of "dry" lubes have worked best for me. I really like Maxima's "Chain Wax".
