If my belt is too wide will that make my max go slower

Was using a 1 and a quarter inch wide belt on my max 2 just ordered a new 1 and it's not as wide I think it is 1 and 3 sixteenths my. top speed with the old belt was a wopping 13 mph .hoping new belt being smaller will give me a little more speed. the max 2 should go 22 mph i think...also my primary clutch is rusted inside. When i got into the 4th hour of my ride this past sundaythe clutch wouldnt disengage completely. Anyone know a link where i can get new internal parts for clutch.think its a780 series..... 96 max 2... 14 hp briggs v twin

Your problem is not with your belt. A 1 1/4" belt works just fine when adjusted properly. You could try Ebay for clutch parts, but your best bet is probably Quality Drive Systems OR just buy a new clutch.

Thanks... just fired it up n primary is only movin belt up pulley half way...was told it should be 1/4 in from top at full throttle ...mus b the clutch. The higher the th belt rides determines the speed of my max... is that rite??? It rode an inch from top of primary with old belt

    hi
Without being there it is hard to give advice ,although .
Both clutches work together to acheive a gear changing system .
Remember the belt MUST BE RECOMENDED FOR THE CLUTCH SYSTEM
Basically the system has to be all matching components to acheive good performance
Overhaul both clutches at the same time
    Any worn parts replace
    Fit red spring to secondary

Remember u may not have enough power to pull thru the gearing
yes at full speed the belt rises to within around 1/4 inch of o/d of primary
Full speed on flat level hard ground [easy conditions ]

    To clarify a little....
The 1 1/4" belt will start a little higher in the secondary, giving the much needed extra little bit of LOW end and not changing the high end.
Usually a problem like yours is all in the belt deflection. Read this ATV and Snowmobile Belts - by Dayco
There are also countless threads about the best way to tension it...try doing a search and reading a few.
First off, put your machine in neutral and rev the engine while watching the clutches......see if they cycle correctly. Then adjust the belt tension and try it again.
    Good luck

    Rusted issue....
To get you running and not tearing up belts.
    .
    Remove the secondary clutch.
Collapse the clutch in a vise far enough to remove the small woodruff key(You may need to 'tap' on the clutch with a rubber mallet as you are tightening the vise to get to that woodruff key).
As extra protection, use a VERY long 1/2" threaded rod with big fender washers to keep the two clutch parts together and from possibly becoming two heavy flying projectiles.

Then remove the external circlip, the two parts should now come apart as you open vise up(back off nut on threaded rod too).
Sometimes some cleaner and extra persuasion are needed to get them apart.
    .
When they are apart, sand the rusted areas with 80 grit, then move to 120grit, then polish it with scotch pad disks in your die grinder.
If you have access to a large lathe you can dust them up there too.
    .
You will not get it all and it wont be perfect, but it will get you running until you find a good replacement.
    .
Clean up the shaft with files to remove burrs, and finally more scotch pad disks to polish it up.
It should slide smoothly in that shaft without the spring.
    .
Put it back together now and use that 1/2" threaded rod to keep things safe again.
    .
Start looking for a replacement clutch...... I am!

I have to pull both sticks back several inches to be abel to shift. Not sure if yours is the same or not but worth mentioning just in case.
