    generic transmission for Lifan/Duromax swap?

real noob type question here, just got an aatv (happens to be trail boss). can the old factory stuff be ditched and replaced with anything more available .I do not want high hp (the lifan 15hp looks fine) and #40 chain from tractor supply seems fine.not looking for complete factory resto just want to make it go and have fun ? cheap is good but something a bunch of auto mechanics can mess with is best

I don't have any experience with a trail boss however most of our machines can have engines swapped out fairly easily since thy use variable speed clutches and not a direct, bolt-on transmission. Your main limitations will be available space, getting the clutches to line up and finding a correct length belt. If you have some mechanical skills it shouldn't be too difficult to do.

The trail boss used a 2 stroke engine, that will have a tapered output shaft. The honda clone (lifan) will have a 1" straight shaft....meaning you will need a new clutch.
Avoid the chain at tractor supply, it is very weak. If you can find a REAL tractor dealer, they will have better chain.
