Thats great news to hear! I know you must be a very happy camper now. Its amazing how changing just a few teeth on the sprockets , can make such a profound difference, when the application is correct. Since you have changed out the sprockets and the clutch spring as well ,what are some of the things you have now tired with your custom made 6x6 , but could not do before? Have you tried any water test with it since the change? Inquiring minds on this 6x6 forum, what to know.

Since you don,t have all the swamps and water bayous where my friends and I like to ride our amphibs , fully independant, 6 wheel drive suspension ,might just be the ticket for you. Have you checked out the springer set up on Whipper,s yellow Attex, and watched the video clip of it in action? It works great!

Do you think now you will replace the 23 Briggs and go back to the hot 570, Yamaha snow mobile motor, or stay with the Briggs for your daughter?

The only thing I've done as far as testing so far has been small climes and hard pavement turning. Before the mod's, I couldn't put one side of the T-20 into reverse and do a 180 zero turn without the belt squeeling. Now I can do it on pavement. As far as the springer mod, I already have a jeep with all kinds of wheel travel. I'm diggen the ride and off roading with no suspension. All though Whippers springer did get me looking at that snow mobile engine again.

The Mud Bug tire by Maxis, seems to be a good compromise ,when used in the water and mud for an amphib. Its not a fast swimmer in the water like a Fronteer tire or a Good year Terra tire. The trick to make these tires work on an amphib, is a very light throttle hand. This will give you a moderate amount of water speed.

In my opinion,,getting up a wet creek bank thats glazed over with mud , is more important than fast water speed. The tires now available for amphibs , glaze over far too quickly to suite me, in the thick mud I ride in. This is why I promote the Mudbugs and the Swamp Fox Plus tire. It is another good compromise in an amphib tire. The Swamp Fox Plus tires start at 26 inches, so this won,t work on most amphibs . My friend Dan has 27 inch Swamp Fox Plus tires on his Max IV, and loves them for driving through the log infested swamps where he lives !

But, on the flip side, both the Mud Bug and the Swamp Fox Plus tires, are great tires to have in thick mud , compared to any other amphib tire on the market . This is because they shed mud so much better and are more puncture resistant as well

The good thing about the Maxis Mud Bug tire , is the light weight, plus it will not sap the power of a smaller engine , like most heavier, more agressive , ATV tires do.

I bought this tire in the fall of 2005. I have never had a tire perform like this one has in mud, snow, dry, rocky, it doesn't matter once the huge tire lugs get a bite you will go through whatever lays in front of you. I had Mud Bug tires on my 300 4x4 Honda and I loved them. Even though they are called a mud tire, they were excellent in the rocks, snow, hard pack, etc. I went with other tires for my new '06 Vinson. I am now going back to the Mud Bugs because the other tires take up too much power in rolling resistance (I noticed this right away just pushing the ATV around in the shop). I have 25 inch Mud Bugs on my 06 Yamaha Rhino. I use these tires in rocky desert terrain. These tires have incredible traction, zero vibration on hard pack roads, and a compound that doesn't tear up in the rocks.

Well ,I guess that just about settles it. What ever floats your tub. ( literally ) Yes,,if you are up to the challenge that an unsuspended amphib will give you ,and you really enjoy it,, then the only thing left to do , is to get your amphibious wheels wet ,and really enjoy the sport. Yes,, Whippers Yellow spider springer really rips , no doubt about it I,m sure right now ,,that the wheels inside your head are turning , about how long it will take to get that hot 570 Yamaha motor, back inside that alluminum tub. Keep us all posted on the latest developements . Inquiring minds need to know !

Red Spring

Im hearing more and more about this red spring,will it make that much of a noticable difference? what is involved in the istallation? does anyone know what the cost of them are? Once again im liking this site and everyones dedication to helping out us new folks who have become addicted to this 6x6 thing; John from NEW JERSEY (Im thinking theres not to many on here fron JERSEY)

Well I decided that this spring I will be selling my set of Goodyear 26x12x12 Super Terra Grip tires that were factory tires on my Hustler BIG FOOT and jump on the Mud Bug band wagon. I made that decision after I saw a fellow forum member's Hustlert BIG FOOT rebuild with some 26" mud tires on it (although they arent Mud Bugs) and I said that its a must have. I would assume that what I have heard about them being decent in the water is true because they are shaped just like a Goodyear Rawhide III. I hear that these Mud Bugs are pretty impressive in the mud, which my BIG FOOT is primarily for.

Reference the mud bugs and water speed

JPSWIFT1-Congradulations on your choice for a big aggressive tire-your water speed may not be as good as the Goodyears but with everything else you will never look back. Matt recently conducted a water speed test on 25" mud bugs with the v facing forward they gps'd at 1 mph. Not a great water speed but look what you get in mud eating ability. WOW! Hey please tell me where you got those aluminum 5 lugs rims? Are they 8 1/2 inches wide? I want a set for my Max. Please let me know okay?

I like the way that thing looks,what a BEAST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!Man, your doing a really nice job on building that Hustler. Jp, the tires need to go on the other way. Look at the arrow on the side of the tire to show the right way.With the tires being on backwards , they throw alot of water up in the air (all over the place)!!!They wont swim very good with them being the wrong way.

Remember, these tires are not Amphib tires , which every one puts on backwards , they are(atv) mud tires . Man , you will really love what they will do for your beast. Its looking really good. I put some 25x12x9 mud bugs on my 72 Max2 , and it sure changes the way the car looks, thats for sure.

That is actually not my Hustler, that is the Hustler that influenced me to put these tires on mine. I am actually already done with my restoration. I just wanted to show everyone what fellow 6x6world memeber, Meinfield did with his rig. I dont really know where he got those aluminum rims, but maybe he could tell us. Anyways, if you put the treads backwards on the Mud Bug tires, will water speed increase?

Matt Oxender recently ran a GPS water speed test on the Mudbugs facing forwards and backwards. Facing backwards the Mud Bugs Gps at .o8 water speed , and facing fowards , tney GPS at 1 mph water speed.
