Briggs 16 hp vanguard starter removal.

Hi, I have a mid 90 MaxII with a Briggs 16hp vanguard. I have the transmission out for repair and also removed the engine to replace the starter. This might sound like a foolish question but how do I get to the back bolt to remove the starter? I can't seem to get a socket back there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you pull the starter bendix forward by hand you can get a swivel socket to slip in there.

I changed that bolt to a SHCS (socket head cap screw), it's real easy to get that allen key/wrench in there.
The trouble with retirement is.... I never get a day off !!!!

Depending on how old the engine is, it may have a torx built into the head of the hex head bolt.
We are all assuming you have removed the cover with 2 small screws that covers the drive.
