    axle tubes

HEY GUYS ANOTHER QUESTION AXLE TUBES WHAT ARE THERE PURPOSE? A PREVIOUS OWNER OF MY THUNDERCHIEF PUT SPROCKETS DIRECTLY ON 2 OF THE AXLES. I WAS WONDERING WHY THEY USED AXLE TUBES INSTEAD OF DOING THIS? HE BURNT 2 OF THESE OFF AFTER SEVERAL FAILED WELD ATTEMPTS.

Umm, He welded the sprockets directly to the Axle? If so this would stop you from removing the axle without removing the gear, and grinding off EVERY little nub so it will slide through the axle. Splined Axles avoid the bolt issues. Whipper makes a nice set, should be bulletproof (I'll know soon, he just finished my set today for my racer) The tubes hold the sprocket, provide the room for the bolt that mounts through the axle and also help locate the axle between the bearings.(tube can't slide through bearings, so even if locking collars fail your axle can't wander far)

    AXLE tubes cont.,

Hey 6x6 thanks for the response I need to clarify myself the sprockets weren't welded to the axle it was the sprocket tubes that were all welded up. The sprockets he put on were slipped over the axle and bolted in the original position. I was wondering what the actual idea behind the sprocket tubes is thats all? THANKS AGAIN!:
