Didn't turn out how I wanted, so I may end up doing this one again later:

Are there any results afterwards in regards to the start up smoking and knocking? I'm curious on the heating up also. Mine is a 18 magnum wich I find heats up easily. Is yours liquid or air cooled?

    Um, .............yes
The puff of smoke is still there on startup, but that's no suprise if we think that I might have weak rings on one cylinder.
The knocking turned out to be a loose heat shield( Flame Suit On)
Liquid cooled 20 hp Kawasaki..................at the moment
