What is the best way to store my spare tires to prevent weathering, dry rot, etc? Should I store them in a cardboard box packed with paper? Do they survive better in humidity or no humidity? Should I take the valve stems out? Stack them on their side or upright? etc. I have some old style vulcanized balloons, and some Rawhides with and without rims that I need to store through the cold Wisconsin winter.
You want somewhere that is as cool and dry as possible. For car tires long time storage is typically recommended in plastic bags. Put each tire in its own plastic bag and evacuate as much air from the bag as possible. Then tape the bag shut. Most people that do this will stack the tires on their sides. This was something I read somewhere on the web when looking to store a spare set of car tires that I had. I remember it saying not to store tires in an attic where it can get hot and humid but rather a basement if possible. I'll see if I can find the article for you.
