    T20 Tranny question

Hey guys. I'm new to the site. I've got a 1985 hustler 950 with an 18 hp B&S IC engine and a skid steer tranny. One side of the machine does not function in reverse, which makes backing it on a trailer impossible! Can I adjust the plunger in order to make it engage? It seems to work fine in forward. Also, the shifter has 2 extra locations in forward and reverse. Does this thing have a high and low gear? My rear seat keeps knocking my spark plug wire off. I guess I need to put some rubber bumpers under it to stop this. Thaks for your help. I plan on using this to hog hunt in the swamps of Arkansas. I found out my 4 wheeler is in fact not a submarine.

The t-20 trans only has the three gears: forward-neutral-reverse. There is no high/low in either direction. I'm no t-20 expert like many guys on the site, but i recently rebuilt one and based on that I would suggest there is an issue with a shift collar inside the trans or the pin on the shift plunger. The first thing I would do is pull the shift plungers and see what the pins look like. The t-20 article on this site should point you in the right direction to do this.

I'm sure someone will chime in knowing exactly what's wrong.

    Hi:
Well, you don't have reverse (on one side), but you do have braking on both sides while in forward? If so then like ES said, check your shifter (Diamond shaped piece that moves with the shifter.) If you have little or no braking (when you pull back on the stick) on the side that does not reverse, then you need to adjust the plunger, or maybe replace the band if it's too far out.

As for hi-lo, nope, like ES said it's forward-N-Reverse. It does tend to almost engage, then as the teeth line up, drop into gear, this "almost engaged" spot may feel like an extra gear in each direction, but if you try to go, it will quickly pop out into neutral, try moving the sticks with one hand while applying some pressure on the shifter (NOT A LOT OR YOU CAN DAMAGE THE PINS OR SHIFT COLLAR!) and it should be easier to shift.
