"Is there a process to discover an air leak?"

Yes. Carb cleaner, brake cleaner in the spray can. Just about anything that is flammable. Spray in and around the manifold/base of carb/manifold where it enters the block while it is running. If you notice an increase in rpm this would indicate a vacuum leak (air leak).

When it "runs out of fuel" when doing donuts in one direction only it is because the float is set too low. There is not enough fuel in the bowl. The main jet is near the bottom on the RH site of the front of the carb. Not enough fuel in there and centrifugal force of a forward donut sends the fuel level up towards the LH rear of the fuel bowl leaving the main jet to suck air and fuel. Adjust the float so it shuts off the fuel when the level in the bowl is higher. This will solve the donut problem.
