Clutch
Hello-I just joined this sight and already have a question. Do most aatv use a torque convertor type centrifical clutch? My catagator uses a hydraulic type clutch where the clutch halves go together by hydraulic preasure from a foot pedal. I plan on upgrading to a Vangaurd engine and the appropriate clutch. I like the hydraulic set up but my machine sat for 24 years and the clutch cylinder is rusted beyond repair. I live in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan where the winters are long so I have a good winter project ahead of me. Thanks Packrat

Pretty much every AATV, except for hydrostatic drive and some very old odd ball machines, use a torque convertor type centrifugal clutch. You can get a new one here:

If you're going with a Vanguard engine, get one with a 1" shaft, because the drive clutches for these are much cheaper than ones for a 1 1/8" shaft. A 23HP Vanguard can be bought with a 1" shaft, and that would be a nice motor to power your Catagator.

hey packrat, what model is your catagator? I have one also, working on and trying to get some axles made. I have some info on them if you need any.

Thanks for the info. My catagator has a 24 hp Kohler now so a 23 hp vangaurd should work. Im looking toward a vangaurd because of availability. Is there an engine that would be better?

Hey Mike- I'm not sure what model it is.; It is 8 wheel drive. It has the 24 hp Kohler engine. It also has the single wheels, not the duals. Also, it a 1968 model. I've had it for about 35 years but haven't started it for 24 years and the weather took its tool on the cosmedics. I know where there is one more but it has the dual wheel set up. I'm not sure if he will sell it or not. Packrat

do you have manuals? I can send you a file with info to your email.

Hey Mike- That would be great. I did have the manuals and all of the paperwork that the original owner had but through the years must have got misplaced. If you can send them to johnson9600@gmail.com. that would be wonderful. I would be happy to pay you for your effort. I used this unit quit a bit for about 8-10 years and then parked it. My wife and I do a lot of off roading with friends and have a Honda 4 wheeler and a Arctic Cat Prowler. I also have a couple of 4x4 trucks and a jeep. I plan to build my '53 Chev pickup into a 4x4 by next spring. I had planed to sell the catagator and my 6 wheel Chaparel but never got around to it. This past summer my son bought a hunting camp. There is a good road to the camp but an awfull swamp to go through to get to our deer blinds. We spent more time getting unstuck with the 4 wheelers than we did hunting. My son then reminded of some of the places we drove the catagator when he was a kid. That's when I decided to fix it. I could probobly use it the way it is but the clutch cylinder is rusted beyond use. I might fix the Chaparel also. This should be a simple fix. I had a 300 cc Jlo which blew. I do have a sweet running 250 Rotax twin that I can put on. I have the tracks for the catagator but probobly wouldn't use them in the summer. I did put them on when I first got the machine but caused too much resistance between the machine and the road and snapped that # 50 chain a couple of times. Anyway, thanks for the reply and offer for the info on the manuals. If I owe you anything, let me know. Thanks Don (Packrat)
