      I used 1-1/4" sch 80 seamless pipe to outer sleeve my max II axle shafts and then added gussets as well. Note that I did NOT weld the sleeve to the axle on the inboard side. This would weaken the shaft and the sleeve to axle is a pressed fit already so not needed. Hope this helps.
