my clutch is about the only noise i have a problem with.

Hey is it an AIR or water cooled engine? water cooled ones are generally quieter to a degree, however these are industrial engines, not quads or UTV's which for some reason do sound SOOO damn much quieter than ours.

I've got the same issue however my engine is BEHIND me so it's less annoying. I do fully plan on a engine box with air ducts once I get my diesel in to quiet this beast down.

I see you are on the "WEST COAST" where abouts are you at?

Perhaps some good sound deadener like guys use on firewalls of cars an such all around inside the engine comp and underside of hood. maybe something like...
Sound Dampening, Vibration Damping, Thermal Insulation for automotive applications - HUSHMAT.

Love those ear muffs may have to get a set. However I'd more like something I can chat back and forth with another person. Like in a helo type setup for coms, and tie in a radio to that, but again...I digress...

The sealling the shifters with rubber boots or some seal is a great idea.

It is water cooled.
We live just north of vancouver B.C. In a Little town called Powell River.
The ear muffs would be great if they had a two way intercom built in with the radio. But then whey would be in the $200 range I bet.

My old Tucker snow cat was right up with the argo. You could not even hear yourself think. So I put some good sound deadening material down on the firewall and flour. It help a little but still you could not even talk to anyone. On the cat, the motor was bolted to the frame no rubber mounts at all. I fabricated some good rubber mounts between the frame and motor and the traney. What a big difference that made. Like the argo, the motor and traney again are bolted solid the frame.. The easiest way would be to try and insulate the back side of firewall and dash. But again that is putting a bandage on the problem.
Our winter seamed to of disappeared And spring is a pond us now I think I may just start to to tinker with this noise. And try some good sound deadening material first. then start on the mounts. If you put your mind to it,It can be done. Just to find the time. I may build a whole new plate that the motor and traney sits on. And incorporate rubber mounts on that.

hi ,
the key to sound reduction is three key areas
decoupling - the vibration transmission from one layer to the next
mass /weight -the heavier the wall gets the less transmission
absorbtion - the thicker the acoustic foam the better [the v shaped or pyramid shape is the best ]

I will refer to a building construction as the example [all sound proofing originally comes from this industry ]
1st plywood attached with anti noise clips to stud work and isolating glue
2nd a layer of isolating latex glue
3rd a second layer of ply
4a a three layered 1/4 foam ,1/4 mass loaded vinyl and at least 1-2 inches up to 4 of sound absorber ,it comes as a multi layered sheet with a sticky back
4b or mass loaded vinyl sheet then sound absorb foam

The other areas are mainly engine rooms generators etc
Most use the foam/MLVinyl sticky sheets
The info was as a result of trying to quiet down a generator
Interestingly an engine produces a lot of noise
intake air
exhaust
air cooled engine fan

i just did the firewall and most of the engine compartment in a sound insulation called B-Quiet ultimate. seems to have helped. its reasonably priced compared to dynamatt and almost as good. they say if you put 2 layers on it triples the effectiveness I am going to do this just havnt had time yet. B-Quiet sound deadening material they are out of lethbridge alberta so shipping would be cheap to you.

I was getting some noise from my driven clutch as the brass /bronze bearing was worn and the clutch wobbled alittle made a world of difference when it was changed

I agree with the suggestions listed above! That sound dampener is awesome stuff!! Theirs a few different brands and they all work great. It's not overly expensive and easy to install, just use acetone or some simpler cleaner to clean the surface before applying and you'll see quite a difference. I even used spray insulation as a sound killer but wouldn't use it in a Argo.

regarding the issue with heat and noise, a sheet or so of a heat/sound insulator will absorb a lot of issues. I've got a lot in my restored International Scout as well as in my Coot, and on another machine I'm building. I highly recommend it, although it is pricey.

Are the max and Mud Ox just as noisy.
I know some have put insulation on the fire wall to help with the noise. Has anyone tried to solve the problem at the motor end like motor mounts. I know its not as simple as it sounds or looks. But their must be a way to do it.

My Conquest is the same way. At an idle it's quite, under power is it can be a little loud.

I have goon over it with a fine tooth comb. To make sure there is no exhaust noise. Its the noise you get when the motor is bolted solid to the frame. I will post a photo of the Argo stereo the wife bought me. It works great.

Try to shake the exhaust cover by hand, if it clangs some thing is loose/ rotted. A windshield greatly increases interior noise and a cab more so, you could try to seal the shifter hole with a piece of inner tube or pipe insulation to see if that helps any.

When I am just sitting there she is nice and quite. Its just under load and when you are moving. And the most of the noise is coming from the engine compartment. She is not exhaust or chains It sounds like the she could use some good motor mount. I know they do not have any to start with.
