Two motors would not require twice as many batteries. Actually, together they would require a little more amperage as one (under the same load conditions of the whole machine). Agreed on the cost of a second controller and motor though. As for foward/reverse capabilities on each motor, you would just need to find the right controllers as motor forwarding/reversing is quite common in industries using VFD's.

Those are things I have been wondering about.Originally posted by Roger S View PostI know I suggested the t20, but have no idea what it would take to fab it in there/if/how it would work/fit.
I'll keep looking for a solution. It's one step forward and two steps back recently.

I am going to follow the advice given and see if I can locate a T20. I have been reading as much as I can about them. I have never seen one in person so I'm not sure how to find a good one and all the parts that go with it. I have been watching craigslist hoping to find another AATV to use as a donor.
I'm also thinking about going with double #50 chain. The PO of my Argo had used chain that was smaller than single #50.
#50 fits the sprockets I have now so I'm not sure if it's an upgrade I need.

You can just right click any image you want to see full size and choose "view image".

Yea I agree, the way a differantial works, it will create a gearing ratio twice as high as normal on a full turn. Like in a car/truck, when one tire isn't turning, the other is turning twice as fast as normal. Turning take power/torque and when your gearing it up your loosing torque.Originally posted by Roger S View Postargo trans eats power in steering effort

Looking awesome so far, looking forward to watching this as it comes together.

Here is a rough draft of the spring and a-arm assembly with tire.

Thanks Whipper. I just couldn't get the springer idea out of my head.Originally posted by whipper-ag View PostCool. Keep the updates coming.
Whipper

I am learning as I go and have made some mistakes, but I'm having fun and hope the 8x8 will perform well enough for me to sneak up on some wild critters. I have no plans to mimic your riding style. I need a mellow machine.
=ego= is waiting for me to make final adjustments to the suspension before we machine anything else.
Thanks Tech.Originally posted by techfx View PostThis will be very interesting!
Using a T20 was mentioned on page one. I haven't read anything negative about the Argo trans, so what are the benefits of using a T20? Anyone?

Mike,Originally posted by Mike View PostI hear you but hey, an electric Argo 8x8 Springer isn't the most practical (cost-wise) vehicle to begin with
If you ignore the cost aspect the only other factor that would be prohibitive is the weight of the batteries?
But if you are applying 48V to each motor that's 8 batteries total for two motors @ ~ 20 lbs a piece for 160 lbs. Even if you are using 96V that's 16 batteries at 320 lbs. But you eliminate the heavy transmission too. Plus it's an 8x8.
Just thinking out loud here...
That would be my next choice.
I'm using 24 Thundersky 160AH LiFePO4 batteries that weigh 12.3 lbs each. My pack weighs 295 lbs.
A 48V pack would need 16 batteries and weigh 197 lbs. Double that and add 75 lbs for the second motor and you're at 470 lbs. The additional cost of batteries, motor and controller will be over $2K. Two motors just complicates too many factors for me.
I don't think it's that simple but it would be nice.Originally posted by evil8x8 View PostTwo motors would also allow you to counter-rotate instantaneously.
Roger,Originally posted by Roger S View PostLooks like a T20 candidate..
I considered using a T20 and decided to go with what I have now. My drive train has me just a bit worried in regards to reliability.
Thanks jp. I will try and keep the thread current.Originally posted by jpswift1 View PostGood call, Roger.
That looks like a really cool project......be sure to keep us updated on it.
