As u have stated it really depends on the temps in the engine oil caused by the engine load and the day time temp and humidity
I must say that I was using the kohler in 80-95 % humidity around 95f day and loaded 100%.
In heavy hard working conditions peak of 240-up to 260f oil temp
In cooler weather and 75% load 205 F 75f ambient
Even in the cooler time the temp the temps were still to high 190 f would be ideal

The golden rule for an air cooled engine is that they will always operate a little closer to the max threshold than a water cooled unit .

All this info is based on the 25hp 725cc kohler . Apart from the bore size the block is the same as the 18,20,23 these engines deal with the heat far better .

The factory coolers are only good for around 30 f
An oil cooler , stacked plate type as per OEM robin kohler briggs say 1 1/2 thick 8x 11 inch with a 10 inch fan will give u a reduction in temp 55 - 60 f
I used this type and size on 25hp kohler for 7 years
A stacked plate cooler with fins eg radiator style will be up to 33% better at cooling
The least effective cooler is the tube and fin type [ old school trans cooler] approx. 50% effective as a stacked plate with fins

Have you monitored the temp and what temp are you operating at? i have the stock cooler on my Briggs AH Eagle 4 and it runs at 190 deg sump temp for trail riding..

You do not want the 40 series or 44 series clutches. They are smaller diameter and more narrow limiting performance and belt choices.

The Powerbloc units are similar in price to the comet 1195's, but much easier to find. I am surprised to see MFG Supply has the 1195 in stock. Maybe this is good news and means the supply/availabilty of them is back.

Here ya go,not cheap but I don't know what the CVTech unit's are running. I'm running this clutch in my green Superchief. It's the 1195.

There's a lot of people running a LOT higher horses than that on both clutches.

I believe your problem is going to be finding choices in clutches for a 1 1/8" shaft.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah the CVTech clutch cost me around $325. It's good for up to 40hp. I think the 780 clutch is only good for up to 23 hp? Is this true? Thanks

Combine an old set of Runamuks or similar ribbed tire with that heavy(ier) fiberglass Hustler and you will be Toyko Driftin' all day long!

Ah thanks Mike. I need to learn how post pics like that. Ok, I have an old driven clutch out of a four stroke max I could just use that. Yeah I have never bought a drive clutch for a 6x6. I built a custom golf cart with a honda gx620 in it about a year ago. I used a CVTech tunable drive clutch in that. It worked great. Wonder if I could order another one of those. Main reason I want this engine is because of the EFI and the oil cooler. My current hustler 950 cuts out when I am sliding into hard turns(maybe from the fuel sloshing in the bowl?). I want to be able to drift the fiberglass hustler all day with no power loss.

You can keep the sprockets the way they are and see how they suit you for the time being. You will need a new drive clutch, and would benefit from changing out the spring in the driven clutch to one designed for a four stroke. The original two stroke spring will get you by, but changing it would be an easy, worth-while job. I don't know if anybody's used this engine or not. I say pull the trigger and give us a review.

I am in the process of restoring my third Hustler. My dad has had it since the early 80s and passed it on to me. It has the CCW440 in it. The machine being in the hot Georgia heat I am gonna ditch the finicky air cooler 2 stroke and go with a big vtwin efi four stroke. I found this engine and have never been around one. Has anyone put one in a 6x6? It's a Robin Subaru V-Twin Engine 28 HP EFI. Would I have to change my sprockets on account of the four stroke not turning nearly as fast as the old 2 stroke?
