kohler 2stroke cdi to regular coil?

i have a kohler 440 2 stroke with cdi and just wondering if the cdi unit can be eliminated and replaced with a regular coil(s) ?
i dont know that there is anything wrong with mine , just figure their hard to come across and if it was to go bad would a standard coil work?
