the coils should fire with the grounds unhooked, if not you have fried the coil packs. they are pricey, but if you find the briggs part # and punch it into the search at
Mower Parts | Lawnmower Parts they will come up with a much less expensive aftermarket coil that i've had really good luck with. hope this helps
