Smile I just got a Hustler and I've got questions.

I just picked one of these things up and am I glad I found this site. I'm into vintage snowmobiles so this will be a fun new hobby. I need to know where to look for a data plate and or how to ID the year. This thing looks almost complete but is missing the steering sticks so I'll need help finding them. It has a L/C Chapparall engine. 340 or 440 not sure yet. Twin 38mm Mics, sitting in the "soup" as I type. It will need all 6 tires. I also got a Brand New canvas cover it looks like it's never been on the unit. 40 hours on the meter! Look forward to chating about this with you guys. Kevin.

Hi Kevin, welcome to the site and congratulations on acquiring a 6x6 Hustler! Try http://www.tiresunlimited.com for the common 22" rawhide III tires or look around the site and see what others are running if you want a tire specifically for mud or just for water, etc.

As for the identification, I will have to let one of the Hustler experts chime in on that. A lot of them are at the Ledges ride this weekend but I'm sure someone will chime in when they get back.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I got it running last night and it doesn't look like it will need a whole lot of work. I'll start cleaning it up and making a list of parts I'll need and get back to you.

Heres the really sweet part about this new toy. It came with a bag something I just opened this morning and this is what it was. A practicly brand new cover. Not only the zip and snap on 3 piece with windows but then there was this complete cover to go over all of that. Almost NOS condition.
Now back to the other pics. See where the controls are missing the sticks and whatever they attach to? I need those parts!!! Can anyone help? I also need a throttle cable. (but can make one if I have to) I need a brake cable, she's froze. I also need jetting and clutching specs for 8000feet. It has a Comet Duster primary clutch. Still not sure of engine size. My snowmobile books are not helping figure that one out and I can't see any markings yet. It had 360 mains and 40 pilots so when I got it running it was stumbling all over itself. I dropped the mains down to 250 and she screams (on the trailer). I'm guessing I should pull the chains off and service or replace them. They are tight and a little rusty. A good shopvac and a bath is soon to follow. Still would like to know what model this is to?

Very cool on the top....had not seen one like that before!

Several thoughts:
1) Throttle cable-If it was me I would give Recreatives Industries (Max) a call and buy a Max style throttle lever and Max IV throttle cable. This is what I have on my Hustler, and the handle is aluminum instead of plastic.
2) It looks like you are just missing the laterals on your controls. Richard Clarke would have some, or you could fabricate some, I can take some pics if you need them.
3) Since you are buying a used machine, I would highly recommend changing all bearings and chain. This will increase reliability a lot, plus you will be able to re-seal the flanges in a proper manner to get your Hustler water-tight. There is an excellent article on this site that shows the proper axle flange sealing steps when changing your bearings. Depending on what size tires you wish to use, you may want to go with a different inner bearing, I used some two bolt flange bearings that moved my axles out about 1", giving me more clearance for wider tires. Buffalo Bearing is a good source for bearings...triple sealed outer bearings for about 17 bucks.

Yes I would like to see some pics of the controls, maybe I can fab some. Are all of the throttles mounted on the control lever or are there any dash mounted or floor mounted throttles out there?
