Broaching Wheel Hubs

This is how we broach the internal spline in the wheel hubs.

Awesome! I have no machining experience, so I thought internal splines were accomplished by an army of chimpanzees with little chisels.

Is the correct spline depth cut with just one of the mandrels, or do you have to step up to another to make consecutively deeper cuts? By the looks of the holes in the hub, it looks like you're doing everything possible for weight savings...

Most impressive...

The broach is made special for that spline. It cuts the spline in one pass. About 3-4 sec. It's the best way to do production internal splines. With this tool we can duplicate the spline anytime. Well worth the cost for the tool.

Just a little up date.Because of some new design changes, It meant I needed a new weld fixture. We're using it here to check that the new shocks clear the top arm. The shocks are 2.5 in.longer than whats on the Attex. We'll use that fix to weld the bushings on the arms, and the same fixture will be used to weld all the tabs on the side plate in the right location. The 3rd pic we're just checking the location of the waterjet cuts. Had to make a special cut out for the clutch detent. the white delrin spacers fill the resessed area where the bearings bolt up.The side plate still has to be cut down on the ends and the lighting holes added. Most of the R&D is done now,and should progress a little faster now.Bridget told me today, she'd like a bigger motor.
How could I say no.

I've got to get my shop set up with equipment like that. What is the cost of some of the different machines you use for building these parts? Maybe I'll forward the info to Recreatives so they can buy their own machines and make their own parts!

"MaxRules"

Let me help you with your question. I have some knowlage of the prices of some of the equipent needed. A water jet new = $250,000, a 10 foot shear up to 1/4" material = $80,000, 8 foot hydraulic press brake, 120 ton, $60,000, tig welder with built in water cooler $3,000 and the cost of a good friend that will create cnc programs for you = pricless

Of corse there are many other machines he uses, that I don't not know the cost of, CNC mill, CNC lathe, and machines to make axels etc.

Hope this helps.

Well after 3 design changes we're in production. Lot's of improvements. 1" longer trailing arms, bigger shocks and more travel, 7". We bent the trailing arms in the press brake today. welding starts tomorrow. I'll keep posting pics of the assembly as we go.
