    Cool Just bought a 1996 max IV

    Hi
    I'm Dave from West Valley NY. I'm resently retired.
    I just bought a 1996 max iv 600t. I need to learn how to drive it. I also
    want to learn how to maintain it. I can't even shift into forward or
    reverse without grinding the gears.
    I also noticed one side the chain is tight and the other side the chain is
    loose. I move it forward a bit and the chains aren't as tight on the one side.
    Looking for an owners, repair and service manual.
    Can you give me some input or where to go for it.

    New to the Max

    I'm on Dutch Hill Road but I'm in Rochester now for Easter. I'm back and forth quit a bit. I graduated from Orchard Park High in 68.
    I also Have a flat. It leaks in the treads thickest point. I'd like your opinion on the max considering this is my first. I'll give you a call
    when i get out there.

    Thanks for your response. I would like an opinion on what I have. I took out the seats to clean it. Put it on blocks. The chain is tight on one side loose on the other side.
    Turn the wheels a little and the chains aren't tight. Not sure what that means.

    Hi Mike
    I'll be there ( West Valley - dutch Hill Road )from 7/17 to 7/24. I have 24 acres and two pond if you want to stop up and ride. I could also use a few pointers like:
    replacing wheel studs, maintaining the max4, and it runs rough and may have chain and sprocket issues??

    I'm just south of Buffalo, NY and I drive past you quite a bit when I go down to visit friends in the Southern Tier. There a are a bunch of us all around the Buffalo area, with many more members popping up each week it seems. We should get a ride going sometime and we can wrench and BS too.

    Question Bought a max4 with issues need help - retirement project.

    I recently bought a 1996 Max4 with a few issues
    Looking for info or manuals to:
    Wiring kind of a rats nest.
    Need to replace wheel studs - afraid I'll damage axle hitting with a sledge hammer.
    Possibly need new chains and sprockets.
    Engines runs rough a little better after cleaning carb.
    Shifting is a challenge.
    Seems to loose gas prime after sitting a couple days - replaced gas filter
    Fun to ride but want to learn how to repair and maintain.

    Hi Dave, congratulations on your Max IV. There are several manuals in the literature section of the site here: Max IV 6x6 Manuals

    For the wheel studs, spray some penetrating fluid on them and let them sit overnight. Then you can hit them with a hammer and they will come out. It does take a little force but you can usually knock them out with a small hammer and a quick hit.

    If the sprockets teeth are not symmetrical (they look like a hook) then you will probably need to replace the sprockets. The chain will need replacing when it can no longer be tightened by the adjusters. It has then stretched past its usefulness.

    For the rough engine, cleaning the carb and replacing the filter is a good start. Sometimes you have to clean the carb more than once. If you miss just one piece of sediment that clogs one port, it will give you problems, particularly the port at the bottom of the carb.

    For maintenance, grease the bearings, check or change the T20 ATF, lube the chains and keep on top of your oil level and cleaning the air filter. If you have any specific questions, search the site and you should be able to find what you are looking for. If not, just ask. Good luck with it.
