The whole swimming tire thing is kind of a fascinating mystery to me...2 cases in point.
1) Kenda Bearclaws did not swim a stroke for me, but will swim a little on MattO's MudOx
2) MightyMaxIV had all Vampires at one time, and while they swam, he had a hard time turning/controlling them, however; they swim/turn well on the Hustler. The only difference we can think of is that the Hustler has more distance between the front and center axle, than center and rear.

So I think in addition to tread patterns, vehicle type must also be considered. A tire that swims on a 8x8, may not swim on a Max II for instance......it's all one big experiment.

mightymaxIV and I have talked a lot about tires ( facing forwards and facing backwards ) and also the space each tire has between the one next to it .

My theory is this :

The space a tire has in relation to the tire next to it , will also effect the water speed . Boncrshr,s Huster 950 has 25 inch Vampires that are all facing fowards , and it swims fairly well . He can also control his machine in the water . MightymaxIV had Vampire tires in the middle and front of his Max IV , and Swamp fox Plus tires in the rear , and he told me the Vampires made his Max IV very hard to control in the water . MightymaxIV also runs larger sized tires than what came from the factory . This makes his tires run very close together .

Boncrshr,s tires are spaced apart about the same as my Max IV . About five inches between the middle and rear ,and about three and half inches between the middle and front . MightymaxIV runs 27 inch tires , and this gives him about 3/4 of an inch clearance beween each wheel .

When a tire is really close to the one next to it ,, this will cause turbulance in the water , as the front tire rotates forward , the tire behind it
has a harder time pushing the water downward . This is because of the water turbulance created by the tire in front of it . This cycle keeps repeating itself all the way to the last tire .

I think this is one of the reasons the new Argo,s swim so well , because of large space between . This creates less turbulance in the water for the tires to fight against by the tires in front of them . I also know that the Frontier tires swim well too !

I like the frontier tires also but they would kill my ground clearance!

Rock Doctor has frontier tires on his Conquest.. they almost touch each other. He said it would swim upstream and leave a wake. I've heard that 22" rawhide III's on an argo 8 make a poor swimmer. It's all a crap shoot from my perspective.

Well , I guess that kills my theory about tires .

The mad scientist in me wants to see Meinfeld's Hustler with some paddle tires like the mud boggers run...with the kind of horsepower he has I think they would work for him both in the mud and water.
