I have a chance to pick up a 1983 Argo 8x8 for a couple of hundred bucks. The main problem is that the tires need replacing. It runs but I don't know if there are any other issues. I know tires are around $1200. It has the plastic tracks with it. I'm new to these machines so my question to all the experts out there is this worth buying and sinking some money into it or do you think this is too old to drop a couple of grand into it. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks.

If the body is in good shape, and the motor runs well enough...I say buy it. I would just look for cheaper tires, like carlisle at-101's. Someone recently posted a link to get them for $65 each.
Here's the link http://www.powersportsplace.com/part...9044/overview/ $62.95 + $8 shipping??? and you may be able to find them cheaper too.

I would say you'd have a hard time not getting 3x your $ out of just parts. Unless trashed, the tracks themselves should sell quickly for purchase price IMO (around here). For a couple hundred I'd pick it up and before spending a $ do a complete build requirement sheet. If more than $1500 I'd piece it out but that's me. Good luck either way.
