Argo front axle

I have a mid 80's Argo I/C that I am rebuilding. My question is, the front axle has a 4" flange that moves the axle hub and grease nipple further out on the axle than all the rest. Is this simply to protect the axle or.........?? I cant find anything like it in any manual.

It sounds like you are talking about an axle extension. These allow the bearing to contact the axle closer to the hub which will help to strengthen everything and prevent the axle from bending as easily.
