Looking at an 89 magnum 8x8

Hello all, this will be my introduction thread and my(possible) introduction to the Argo world. I'm looking at purchasing an 89 Argo Magnum 8x8 in good condition, runs great, new chains, 8 brand new tires, fold down windshield, and Argo tracks.

Just as a general guess, what would this machine be worth? I really know very little about them. I'm trying to do as much research as I can and I'd like to go into this purchase and not get burned.

Any Ideas as to value and common problems to look for would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum.
Being new to these machines, I'd advise you not to just "buy the first one you find". Do a little research, take a few on test drives, and most of all, figure out what you plan on doing with it. You can't beat an 8 wheeler for hauling lots of gear/people, but it will not be as sporty as a small light weight 6 wheeler like an Attex or a MaxII.
The Magnums are an older model (1980's) and not as sought after as the Conquests or Avengers.....Both of which seem to carry large price tags. Other machines are more common and less expensive (the Max and Attex).
Another consideration is the transmission. Argos use an open differential making only one side drive when in slippery stuff. I find that it takes much more skill to go through the rough stuff. Other machines with a T-20 transmission will give true 6wheel drive.

Magnum's will have hyd.brakes,full instrument cluster,double 50 chains off the trans,front bearing extensions,18 hp kohler,halogen headlights.They were heavier built for Industrial commercial use.I know of no common flaws in the machine,if all bearings are tight and the motor doesnt use oil,or puff on startup,then it should be a sound machine.With the accessorys and if it is truly up to snuff,I can only give a range of 4000.00-6000.00. That is sight unseen,and comparing to todays machine prices.A lower price would be a steal,higher then you should look at something newer.

Run away screaming if it has axle tube pins in it at 4K to 6K!!!!! For that price, it had better have splined axles. I dont know when the pins became obsolete...

From what I now understand it has all brand new bearings as well. Supposed to find out if it has the splined axles tomorrow. My brother in-law is going to be trading a 4 wheeler for it and selling it to me for $2000 so sounds like a bargain if everything is as stated and it does have the splined axles.

There is at least 1000.00 or more worth of tracks, probably at least 800.00 in tires and a 400.oo windshield,that makes the rest of it pretty affordable.If this seems high go price a new one.I'm pretty sure by the time the magnums arrived the pinned axles were gone.I would have to check my manuals though.

my 1987 has splined axles. im sure the 1989 does too.

I love my 1988 Magnum 8x8 it serves me very well up in the bush every year hunting for a few weeks at a time. Splined axled heavy chain and a tough kohler M18 makes it hard to beat!
