  • ok got a problem

ok i have a 08 frontier 650 with 6 hours on it. when i try to turn sharp from a dead start there is something making a slipping noise from under the hood. it's not the chains so the only other thing i could think it could be is the belt but i don't see the belt slipping and the teeth on the belt don't look chewed up. it only seems to do it on hard ground from a dead start when you have to give it a lot of juice to turn. anybody else have this problem. i know the dealer did spray some kind of stp tire shine on the air filter housing and other parts under the hood to make it look shiney. just wondering if it got on the belt and the belt soaked it up.

Don't try dead turn's in High Gear, use Low. It's hard on the tranny in High.

Try some belt dressing or what I like is powdered graphite. I squirt a cloud of it at each clutch, between the belt. It's good clutch bushing lube, too. When you're turning from a dead stop, give it throttle and let the belt engage first, before you pull on the steering lever. Just for a split second, till you feel the vehicle move an inch or so.

My Max with the 1 speed gear box doesn't seem to have any trouble with ths.

        I'm sorry I couldn't resist. I love Argos too!

ODG is argo's parent company, they make the transmisson. Ontario Drive and Gear. You'd think they could come up with something really decent, but..

Hard to tell without seeing/hearing it. I have heard a frontier belt squeal before. Sounded like a turkey with a sore throat

lol that's how i explained it to the dealer i told him it sounded like a turkey call. if it was the belt would there be a little wear on the teeth? would i be able to see it slip? i had the firewall off and was looking at the belt and could not tell if it was slipping.

Since we are on the belt topic, why are the belts on a Skidoo teeth up & an Argo teeth down?

The "teeth" on an argo belt are just slots cut in the rubber to let it wrap, like an ordinary V belt on a car. The sides of the V are what does the pulling. It's just a V belt running between two pullys that are changing size.

UM>>> What i meant is don't try a dead turn from a start on hard ground, or pavment!
I do wish the argo tranny was a bit tougher, but that's how the chips fall!

The belt could have gotten some of the oil on it and decreased it's gripping power. Like others have said, Argos should not be turned from a dead stop. Roll forward and then turn. Hard surfaces take a lot of power to skid on and blacktop will wear out tires quickly.
I like to point out to new Argo and Max owners that these vehicles are not Cadillacs. They need a break in period for everything to get seated properly. Pops and squeeks are common on many vehicles and if you just listen for these noises all the time, you just worry yourself unnessasarily.

X2 on that, Argo's make some very strange noises. If you are one of those people that try to analize every noise you hear, while driving, Argo's will have you screaming in frustration in no time.
