  • Trolling motor for Argo

    Hello,

    I have a 1979 Argo T base model.
I am looking at putting a trolling motor on it and everyone recommends a long shaft trolling motor. What would be considered a long shaft trolling motor.
I was looking at the 36" Minn Kota, but I was wondering if the 36" would work or do i need to go with a 42" one?
    Thanks

That would depend on what you use for a motor board,if you are using the Argo original for that vintage than the longer the better.Cheers

Hmm, I was just going to mount the trolling motor using a board on each side of the plastic transom mount. Or do I need to purchase a special motor board to mount the motor.

      Thanks

You are OK to do that pretty much what they looked like in the day, just make a filler board with the slant profile to fill in the inside upper body so you have something to tighten too.

My friend has a 2000 Bigfoot , he has a 2x4 bolted across the opening to the hand rails on the back and mounts an outboard/ trolling motor to that not fancy but works .. You can just about see it over the windshield of my machine here ,he does work for the EPA part time and has a metal plate added on for mounting..

I have the argo mount on my 01 bigfoot and a short shaft on a 27 lb thrust trolling motor and it works fine. Used it columbus day weekend in maine and even propells against current. a 36 " shaft would be better but I got it for free. I would like a45-55 lb thrust motor but would stick with the shorter shaft. I mount it across the back of the argo while traveing the trails and it fits the width of the argo perfect. the shorter shaft motor doesn't get hit by much in the water and does propell foward, just my experience.

Just curious, does your 27lb propel faster than the argo tires.I have one myself and haven't had the chance to try it yet.

I'ld say they are about equal or slightly slower, why I want a 45-55 lb thrust. Good for manuevering in tighter places.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I wasnt sure if they even made a trolling motor mount plate for the 1979 model argos.
I was guessing not, since it looks like it has one built into the body itself. I will just try doing what north country tough said.

                  Thanks
