Wanting to stall

Hi guys,

I was just out for a ride in the snow with tracks on, and went over a couple of snow banks with no problem. Then just when I was going to put it away, it seemed as though it wasn't getting enough fuel. I would give it a little throttle and it wanted to stall. I then gave it a little choke and it ran fine, shut it off, and it wanted to stall. As long as I let it idle it was fine, but give it some gas and it just seemed as though it was out of gas??? Put the choke on and I could give it throttle drive it around no problem. I know you fellas will know just what to do! Its an old 17hp kohler, which up to now has been great!

sounds like the carb needs cleaned and or maybe the float bowl needle is not sitting straight due to maybe bouncing over the snow banks. is there any dirt in your fuel tank, fuel filter? when is the last time has the carb has been cleaned?

Dirt or debris in the main jet would be my first thought( clean carb). Fuel pump issue or pinhole in line would be my next guess

It has about 47hrs since its been done. I only have to pull the choke slightly for it to work properly. I'll check the carb out tomorrow.

Clean the carb good. I had the same issue when I got mine. the ethanol is horrible for these motors.

Ya, I found out from the owner of the gas station here about that. From what I have read its deadly on small motors. Good Idea though, I mean using our food source for fuel...yep sounds good! They are suppose to up the percentage of ethanol this coming year. I started to use high end gas in my small motors at a added cost$$$.

different folks here have spoken about a mire additive, I was told to use stable and did but that eventually gummed up. a felow member here cleaned my carb for me a little while ago and the carb was yellow inside from the stabil. I went to a briggs dealer and he turned me onto a fuel additive they sell for small motors and was told to use high test gas. the member here who cleaned my carb and tuned the motor also suggested a little mystery oil and some octane boost. so far no problems but only put about 5 ours on it since. it took about 15 to 20 hours for the stabil to gumm up my carb.

Well I took off the carb and just cleaned the float. I did try and take the brass screw out but all I did was flaked a couple of filings off. I put it back on and now its like its stuck wide open and revs higher then it ever did before??? What did I do wrong? I made sure the filings were cleaned out before I put it back together. I don't know...I may have to get someone who really knows what their doing!

I took it a part again and the top (long needle) jet had a hook on the end of it??? I took it down to the gas station and they said I must have turned it in too far. I turn it in to see how many turns it was set at, but I was very careful not to go too far? Anyway, they told me to gently hammer the bend out of it, which I did with a pc of wood. My question is, is there ANY way this could have happened other then me doing it? Right now I have all the parts soaking in carb cleaner. I'll put it back together tomorrow. Also I never did get the brass screw out, after it soaks I'll just blow it out. I don't know, I may have to get a top jet if it doesn't work.

Stalling 2

Well I cleaned the carb (17hp Kohler) and it seems to run fine, but the throttle doesn't spring back? Is the throttle on the carb spring loaded or am I missing something? Could I hook up a outside spring, so it springs back

on my M18 kohler (18hp) The engine governor puts pressure(tenision)throttle (when running). when not running there is no pressure(tenision) on the throttle. if you go to the kohlers website(kohlerengines.com) service manual for your motor.

I know its all hooked up right, or at least the same way that it was before I cleaned it. Should I try a new adjustment on the gov

when your engine is running does the throttle have tenision on it to stay at idle? the engine govenor only works when running. maybe your govenor set screw got loose. if you look at the service manuel for your motor it will tell you how to reset it. I thought after you cleaned it for a second time it was running good?

Ya, its running ok as long as you operate the throttle yourself to bring it back to idle. I'll check it out tomorrow, I believe as you have said the gov. is lose or it has moved. I am new at this so I really rely on you guys for help. Thanks for all the advice, and I'll keep you updated.

there should be a throttle return spring on that engine. go to kohler's website and download the manual. it will show the correct spring and linkage
