  • New Argo 8x8 750 vs Max IV

My father-in-law wants to purchase a new 8x8 750 with the upgraded tires and 3K Warn winch with front and rear mounts. We found a new 2012 model at our local dealer for 18.5K. Does that sound like a good deal and how will it compare to my Max IV for recreational trail riding? We ride at a place with a couple hundred acres full of ponds and some of the deepest, thickest mud you can dream of. He likes my Max, but we have no local dealers. I don't know that much about the new Argos. Anything we should be aware of?

    Thanks!

An 8x8 and a 6x6 are two different kinds of machines. I do not know if you can really compare them that well. Weight bias is different, seating capacity is different, weight is different, size is different, steering is different etc. I would suggest finding an Argo 8x8 to test drive so you can see what it is like and then decide if it or a Max IV is better suited to your intended use. In either case if you are in a lot of mud you might want to equip either with tracks so you don't spend all your time winching yourself out from being stuck.

The Argo 8x8 750 is a work horse and it's better if you like carrying more cargo or passengers. I have driven a 2010 Argo Avenger 8x8 and I own a 2002 Max IV 6x6. The shorter Max IV is more fun to drive in my opinion in most trail situations because of T-20 tranmission. The Max IV 6x6 is more responsive to driver imputs, easier to drive in tight spacers, a whole lot easier to modify and better access to work on. With a set of Adair tracks on a Max IV, it becomes an awesome mud machine!

For the deep and thick mud where you ride at, a set of Adair tracks is the winning ticket..

Mudbug is right on the mark with that response.......I'd take a Max IV over an Argo 8x8. I've seen and driven both machines, and for trail riding the Max is simply a more nimble machine, plus it's cheaper to service and parts are more readily available, such as the T-20 transmission.

The tracks look like they do a good job in the mud, but don't they kill your swimming ability? We like the Max but there are no dealers in our area. Not being one who enjoys working on his equipment he is concerned about warrenty work and maintenace. I realize the Max IV is relativaly low maintenance it is still a valid concern. Anyone know how Max handles warrenty issues?

I bought my Max IV new in 2002 and I've never had to have any thing done to it that was warrenty related. All I do is tighten the chains when needed , replace when needed, put gas in it, and ride it.

The Adair tracks perform good in the water too.

He ended up ordering a new Max IV. Since I have one there are fewer unknowns with it.

Good to hear.....you'll be very happy with it! You'll really be amazed by the power of the 29HP Kawasaki. AmphibiousDrew and I were at Recreatives today and they told us that your order just came in. Then we went up to MaxIVMark's shop and I drove his Max IV with Adair tracks and the 29HP Kawasaki and a VERY big Argo plow on the front and it moved about 12" of powder like a bulldozer.....and it was only at 1/3 throttle. I can't believe how much power that machine has.
