  • boat motor mounting bracket ???

Hi, I got an "87" 8x8 I/C that has the older style receiver (non 2" square) upside down U. I'm looking to use an 45 ftlb electric boat motor. Can i use (make) a old style (wood) transom that bolts through the top half section in the middle? Or do i need to make a receiver type mount? I'm planning on using it for duck hunting on small electric motor only lakes and maybe slow moving rivers. I've searched other threads and I see alot of different setups. Since my machine is older and has less water weight capacity, i'm planning on adding small side pontoons (10ft x 10in dia). but i'm trying to minimize any excess weight if i can.

On your bracket, it's still going to need to mount to that hitch some how. If need you can get 2 pieces of steel to act as a washer to beef it up.

You could make the old style mount, there is a piece inside the body that is not visible you'll need to make also. I'll try to get a picture of the old style hitch mount lower thrust bracket so you can fab one.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
      Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

posted some pictures that ended up in the 6x6around the world gallery somehow, Mike will probably put them where they should be, the receiver mount is just an example. It may be just as easy to make the off set mount as it mounts to the hitch bolts.

Thanks for the info and pics! Times are tuff right now. So i found some medium duty "L" channel in the shed. I built the outboard mount off the receiver. i'm going to stabilize it to the tub seal (like the side mounts).

I just fabbed up a motor mount for my 55lb thrust tolling motor on my 8x8 out of scrap steel I had laying around. Tested it out this weekend and worked great. I have a thick angle iron running all the way around the tub that I welded the mount on to hold the motor. The plate is bent at the top to allow the motor to rest on top of instead of the narrow edge of the steel. There is alittle movement on the plate for a second when first set a full power. I am really happy with the power as it is much faster than my bald tires lol. Fished out of it Saturday and Sunday until i drained the extra battery I was using to power it. Then I started having fuel issues with the argo motor and couldnt keep it running.

That looks good. how fast will the trolling motor get you going? 5+mph? how long is the shaft? Do you drop prop all the way down? my friend has a 28 thrust trolling motor (36inch shaft) that i am planning on using for now. the way it is sitting right now the prop is located just below the bottom for the tub.

To be honest i have not put a gps to it yet to tell the speed. However, it does move pretty good. When I had it out yesterday with the wind it was still moving faster than the tires by double. I am running a 36" shaft with the propeller running below the tub when dropped all the way down. I really want to see how fast it can move when no wind is present. One thing i know is after a 55lb thrust i wouldnt go less especially in windy conditions or more than one person in the argo.

after looking at cuiser812 setup, i think i will build the old wood syle upper tub motor bracket. Argojim, does that wood motor bracket pic have any info on dimensions so i can copy it? i will then use the receiver to add a basket for duck decoys. I stopped at walmart today and they had a 40 ftlb(36ich shaft) thust motor for $160.00. What size marine battery do you guys use? I saw for 625 cca to 845 cca at walmart. i couldnt see the amp. drain spec. for the trolling motor from the box.

I'll get some measurements in a couple days unless someone beats me.

I am interested to see the mount myself as I just fabbed mine up real quick to get me going with what I had on hand.

What I'm seeing for dimensions are:
                        height 7 inches
width at top is 9 inches for top 4 inches
width at bottom is 7 inches tapering up 3 inches (to the 9 in)
looks to be 2 inches of marine plywood

the step that is contoured to the body seems to be a 2x4 cut at an angle to match the body

The is a inner piece I did not measure but should be same as the outer step piece

Look at the pics posted in misc pics for reference.

Thanks for the dimensions! I built a boat motor bracket that bolts to the upside down "U" receiver, looks like a backwards "L" but i'm worried about it catching on everything. If i'm only going to use atmost a 55 thrust electric trolling motor, i think i'll make the old sytle wooden mount. it will save space and weight. Thanks again!

newargoowner, I love your motor mount. Very simple, I think I might borrow this idea as I have all needed metal lying around.
