  • 1980s argo 8x8 front chains

Firstly would just like to say a big hello to all you 6x6 and 8x8ers,im from the other side of the pond in the uk. What a crackin web site this is. Im looking for some advice on my early 80s 8x8 argo that i have been restoring. Iv had a new chassis made, replaced bearings, flanges and seals, and have repaired and will reuse all shafts and sprockets. However my problem is that the front chains that run from idler shaft to front axle seem loose, about 2inch of slack where as all other chains will need a set of molegrips to hold together to insert splitlink. Is this as it should be? thanks guys.

You had a new frame made? If so, I wonder if the axle spcing is off.

Could you just shorten the roller chain?

If there is too much play Roger is right they spacing in the frame was not the same, I would look for the chain with the removable outer plate and shorten it to a good length look for the connecting link and reduce the chain’s length. I think the used a twin #50 chain.

Cheers guys, yeah the positioning of the idler shaft is a couple of mils out of alignment but will get it sorted. Posted some pics of the rebuild so far, hoping to finish in the next week or so as long as i dont come across any more surprises
