Yet another roll pin question

Ok, after doing some searching I figured out I needed 5/16 x 18 x 2 1/2 hex head cap screws to replace those pesky old roll pins / shear pins, whatever you wish to call them in my 1984 Argo 8x8 I/C. Here is a picture of where I am. I have gotten the bolt through, which was a challenge, and now am trying to figure out how to get the nylon lock nut on the other side. Can someone please advise me how to do so? Or give me another suggestion? I don't want to go through replacing all the roll pins if this isn't a good idea.

If you install the nut with the chains off you could turn the shaft and cut the bolt with a cutoff wheel and then re-install the chain.

how does taking the chain off increase my clearances between my sprocket and my bolt? the length is not an issue here. Taking the chain off would make installing my bolts easier (not installing the nuts). Is there a simple way to take the chain off the sprocket?

Grind off some of the side of the nut, then rotate the bolt to screw it into the nut that will not turn now.

Ok, I understand that. What is the easiest way to remover the chain? Should I pull a link out?

Jgrund85, another option to using a nut is to drill the bolt and use a cotter pin.

You need to grind off half the bolt head. Then cut off ALL the threads!!!!! Drill a hole and put a small cotter pin through it. The bolt will fail at the threaded part and egg your holes. To make a bolt they cut threads into it and this decrease the diameter!!!! The bolts with no threads will outlast the threaded ones two to one!!!!!

I only know this because I learned the hard way. The best and cheapest fix is yanking the axles and sprockets down to a machine shop and getting them keyed.... At least the front two. This will be the best bang for your buck.

I found a machine shop who is will build me new keyed axles for $50.00 a piece. I think I will be doing this, replacing my bearings, seals, and chain. I'm sure this is going to be a fun experience.

Few words of advice. Loosen up the set screws/ and / or locking collars and go drive it in a figure 8 slowly... This makes axle removal easier. Hose down with lb blaster. This should aid in a axle removal. Beat a roll pin in one direction till it moves, (pb blaster again Here). Flip the axle around, then cut or grind it flush to the sprocket, the tap it out the other way with a nice 1/4 inch punch. This eliminates expanding the shaft, and the. Driving it into the axle.... Feel frees to ask how many days of my life I wasted on that screw up! I beat a roll pin and a bolt till they were squished on one end and beat it through the axle... Bad. Bad choice.... And my neighbors two blocks away added to their vocabulary!!!!

Removing roll pins is like birth... Try to remind youself to breath.... Keep calm... Get a biggr hammer... And breathe...
